Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s youngest daughter, Anita Kendi Murungi, died on May 14, 2026, after a short illness.
Her death has seen political leaders and other public figures pour in tributes and messages of comfort to her family.
President William Ruto described Anita’s death as a profound tragedy, noting that the loss of a child leaves an immeasurable void.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi and his family following the untimely passing of his daughter, Anita Kendi Murungi,” Ruto said.
Anita was the daughter of Kiraitu Murungi and Priscilla K. Murungi and was a sister to Nkatha Kiraitu, Mwenda Kiraitu, and Makena Kiraitu.

At the same time, Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia described Anita Kendi as a kind, humble, loving, quiet, and patient young lady whose gentle soul touched many hearts.
He added that her warmth and beautiful character will always be remembered.
As tributes pour in, Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka assured the Murungi family of his support during the difficult moment.
“Please know that my family and I, indeed the Wiper Patriotic Front and Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya fraternity, are with you in this moment, not as politicians, but as people who care deeply about you and your family,” Kalonzo said.
In a condolence message, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua described the loss as heartbreaking and assured the family of his prayers and support during this difficult time.
He noted that he and his wife, Rev. Dorcas Rigathi were praying for the family and asked God to grant them strength and comfort in their time of loss.

Who is Kiraitu Murungi?
Kiraitu Murugi is a Kenyan politician and a Former Governor of Meru County. He is an author of “Beyond Politics” and he recently published a Happiness Journal published by the Happiness Resource Centre, where he is the Chief Happiness Officer.
His political career began in 1992 when he became a member of parliament for the South Imenti Constituency.
He held the position for over 20 years before being elected as the Meru Governor in 2017.
From 2005-2012, he served as a Minister of energy in charge of Electricity, Petroleum, and Renewable energy.

Additionally, he served as the Secretary General of the Party Leader of National Unity (PNU), which was the ruling coalition from 2008-2012.
Kiraitu Murungi holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Nairobi and later pursued a master’s degree in law from the same university.
Further, he enrolled in a master’s degree in law at the Harvard School of Law before embarking on an illustrious career.
Recently, he joined a US-based Happiness Studies organization that has launched a Happiness Journal published by the Happiness Resource Centre, where he is the Chief Happiness Officer.
