Former Harambee Stars striker Wetende Allan Wanga, a 40-year-old former Kenya international born in Kisumu, remains one of the country’s most recognizable forwards after a playing career that took him across Africa and Asia before he retired from professional football in 2021.

Early Life and Education

Allan Wanga was born in Kisumu on November 26, 1985, and grew up in a family with strong ties to football.

His father, Frank Wetende, was a former Kenya international who also played for AFC Leopards and Kisumu Posta.

Wanga’s mother, Noel, initially hoped he would pursue a stable profession such as teaching or the military, rather than football.

After primary school, Wanga joined St Paul’s Shikunga Secondary School in Butere, Kakamega County.

During his school years, his ability as a striker became more evident.

He later said former players and scouts spotted him during trials, despite him arriving unprepared and without football boots.

Former AFC Leopards player George Sunguti reportedly encouraged Wanga’s father to allow him to travel to Nairobi for further trials.

His pathway into senior football began through trials connected to Tusker FC.

Former Tusker coach Jacob “Ghost” Mulee signed him after recognizing his potential.

Wanga said he accepted an early monthly salary of Ksh9,000 because his family had little money, and football offered a chance to improve his circumstances.

Unlike many players whose studies end when professional football begins, Wanga continued with formal education during his career.

In December 2018, he graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Diploma in Human Resource Management.

At the time, he was playing for Kakamega Homeboyz and working as Kakamega County’s sports director.

Career

Allan Wanga’s football journey began at the now-defunct Kisumu-based FIFA Kingdom Youngsters, where he developed as a young striker before entering senior football.

In 2005, he joined FC Lolwe, then a National Super League club in Kisumu.

In his first notable stint, he scored eight goals in 12 matches, attracting attention from top-flight clubs.

His breakthrough came in 2007 when he signed for Tusker FC. Wanga enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons by a Kenyan striker, scoring 21 league goals in 23 matches to emerge as the Kenyan Premier League’s top scorer and help Tusker win the league title.

The remarkable campaign earned him national recognition and opened doors abroad.

At the end of 2007, Wanga moved to Angolan giants Petro Atlético. He quickly settled in and helped the club win the Girabola title in 2008, their first league crown in several years.

During his stay between 2008 and 2010, he scored 19 goals in 35 league appearances and became one of East Africa’s most successful exports.

In early 2010, he joined FC Baku of Azerbaijan, becoming one of the few Kenyan footballers to play in Eastern Europe.

He scored 10 goals in 16 appearances before moving to Vietnam later that year.

Wanga signed for Vietnamese side Hoàng Anh Gia Lai in December 2010. Between 2011 and 2013, he scored 14 goals in 22 league matches.

During this period, he also returned home on loan to AFC Leopards in 2012, scoring 12 goals in 14 matches and helping Ingwe mount a strong title challenge.

He made the move to AFC Leopards permanent in 2013 and finished the season with 17 goals in 20 appearances.

His goals helped the club finish among the league’s top sides and win the FKF Cup.

In 2014, Wanga joined Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh.

He scored 11 goals in 18 appearances and played a crucial role in the club’s domestic success, including the Sudan Premier League title. He also scored the winning goal as Al-Merrikh lifted the 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup.

The striker moved to Tanzania’s Azam FC in 2015, where he registered 12 goals in 19 appearances before returning to Kenya with Tusker FC in 2016.

He later joined Kakamega Homeboyz, where he remained until retiring from active football in September 2021.

On the international stage, Wanga represented Harambee Stars from 2007 to 2015.

He earned 44 caps and scored 22 goals, making him one of Kenya’s most productive forwards of his generation.

He played a key role in Kenya’s successful 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup campaign and was a regular figure in the national team for nearly a decade.

Allan Wanga’s Family and Net Worth

Allan Wanga is married to television journalist Brenda Mulinya.

The couple married in September 2011 after meeting in 2009 when Mulinya was covering a Harambee Stars assignment.

They have two children, a son, Jayden, and a daughter, Adanna.

There is no publicly verified figure for Allan Wanga’s net worth.
