Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that the Biden administration pressured his company to censor certain content during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zuckerberg made the revelation in a letter issued on Monday, August 26 to the House Judiciary Committee in response to its investigation into content moderation on online platforms.

In the letter Zuckerberg detailed how senior officials from the administration urged Meta for months to remove certain posts, including humor and satire related to the virus.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree,” read the statement in part.

The CEO said that despite the pressure, the decision to take down the content was ultimately Meta’s, and he takes full responsibility for the company’s actions at the time.

“Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions, including COVID-19-related changes we made to our enforcement in the wake of this pressure,” said the Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg Expresses Regret Over Bowing to Govt Pressure

He expressed regret for not being more vocal against the government’s demands asserting that such pressure was “wrong.”

“I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it. I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today.”

Also, Zuckerberg emphasized that meta should not compromise its content standards due to any administration influence and affirmed the company’s readiness to resist similar pressures in the future.

“Like I said to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again,” said Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg Highlights Changes Made to Meta’s Fact Checking Policies

Zuckerberg also reflected on a separate incident involving a New York Post story about the Biden family, which Meta temporarily demoted after the FBI warned of potential Russian disinformation.

“That fall, when we saw a New York Post story reporting on corruption allegations involving then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s family, we sent that story to fact-checkers for review and temporarily demoted it while waiting for a reply.”

He later clarified that the story was found not to be disinformation as alleged by the FBI and admitted that the decision to demote it was a mistake.

“It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story. We’ve changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

Zuckerberg Reiterates His Commitment to Remaining Neutral in Matters Election

Additionally, Zuckerberg addressed his financial contributions during the previous presidential cycle aimed at improving electoral infrastructure.

He explained that these efforts aimed to ensure local election jurisdictions had the necessary resources to facilitate safe voting amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite analyses indicating a non-partisan approach, Zuckerberg acknowledged that some critics believe his contributions favored one political party over another.

To address these concerns, he emphasized his commitment to remaining neutral and announced that he would not make similar contributions in the upcoming election cycle so as to avoid any perception of bias.
