Nathif Jama is a Kenyan banker, writer, and politician currently serving as the Governor of Garissa County since August 2022.
He was the pioneer governor of Garissa County, first elected in March 2013 and served until 2017.
After losing the 2017 election, he was re-elected in 2022 on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket.
Before his political career, Jama was a Senior Vice President and Head of the Investments & International Banking Division at Sharjah Islamic Bank, and he also served as Managing Director of the First Community Bank in Nairobi.

Nathif Jama earned a master’s degree in Islamic Banking, Finance, and Management from the University of Gloucestershire in England and completed an MBA certification in International Trade from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland.
In addition, he holds an associateship from the UK Chartered Institute of Bankers, reflecting his specialised training in Islamic banking and financial management.
Career
Nathif Jama Adam began his banking career at Kenya Commercial Bank in Nairobi before moving to Saudi Arabia in 1985 to join Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corporation as Banking Manager.
He then took on a role at Qatar Islamic Bank in Doha, where he managed significant real estate, leasing, trade, and securities foreign investment portfolios.
In 2002, he joined the National Bank of Sharjah (which later evolved into Sharjah Islamic Bank) as Senior Vice President and Head of the Investments & International Banking Division.
He returned to Kenya in 2007 and became the founding Managing Director of First Community Bank, the country’s first Sharia-compliant bank, guiding its expansion into a modern retail banking institution with branches, takaful services, and investment banking operations.
He also co-authored the pioneering book on sukuk investments, Islamic Bonds: Your Issuing, Structuring and Investing in Sukuk, published in 2004, establishing himself as a thought leader in Islamic finance.
Nathif Jama transitioned into elective politics when he was elected as the first Governor of Garissa County on the Wiper Democratic Movement ticket in the March 2013 general election.
His election faced legal challenges, with the Court of Appeal initially nullifying it in 2014.

However, the Supreme Court reinstated his victory by mid-2014, affirming his position.
He served as governor until 2017, after which he was unseated in an election.
He made a successful political comeback in the August 2022 general election, now running under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), reclaiming the governorship from the incumbent.
