Ukrainian forces have managed to crush a Russian attempt to breach defensive lines near Novopavlivka, delivering a decisive blow to Moscow’s eastern offensive.
The operation, staged by the Russian military under heavy fog to evade aerial surveillance, ended in a one-sided defeat after the 59th Separate Assault Brigade and supporting units neutralized all of Putin’s assault groups.
Russian troops launched the attack by constructing a pontoon bridge across the Vovcha River between Yalta and Dachne.
Approximately ten armored vehicles, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, crossed under cover of poor visibility.
Ukrainian Assault
According to the Ukrainian troops, the maneuver aimed to exploit Ukraine’s reliance on drones for early warning.
Ukrainian surveillance detected the movement and directed precision strikes, completely destroying two Russian tanks and five IFVs.
A BMP-1KSh Russian command vehicle was also seized intact without any damage as the soldiers were ordered to surrender and step out of the vehicle.
Fifteen Russian soldiers were killed, and two captured alive during clearance operations.
The 59th Brigade confirmed that all assault groups were eliminated before they could establish a foothold.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the defenders, calling the victory proof of Ukraine’s resilience.
“Every attempt to invade our land will fail,” he said in a national address, urging allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems and long-range strike capabilities.
Novopavlivka’s Strategic Importance
Novopavlivka lies on a corridor Moscow has targeted since spring to push toward Pokrovsk and Zaporizhia.
Novopavlivka controls a primary line of advance, linking Russian positions near Velyka Novosilka to Pokrovsk, a major logistics hub.
Capturing it would allow Russia to threaten Ukrainian supply lines and push toward Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk.
The assault aimed to create a corridor for deeper penetration and encirclement of Ukrainian forces defending Pokrovsk.
The failure at Novopavlivka has not only denied Russia a foothold but has also exposed the vulnerability of its mechanized units under precision strikes and rapid Ukrainian countermeasures.
For Ukraine, holding Novopavlivka preserves its defensive line and prevents disruption of logistics and future counteroffensive plans.
As clearance operations proceed and captured equipment undergoes inspection, Novopavlivka stands as a testament to Ukraine’s capacity to withstand and repel complex threats from its enemies.
Huge Losses for Putin
Despite sustained pressure, Russian units have failed to secure new ground, and Ukrainian positions remain intact.
The Pokrovsk direction remains the most active sector of the eastern front.
Between November 15 and 16, Ukrainian forces reported repelling 151 engagements, destroying three tanks, 26 artillery systems, and 68 vehicles.
Russia is losing over 20,000 soldiers per month on the Donbas defense line, primarily around Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad.
In October alone, Ukrainian forces killed 1,500 Russian troops and destroyed 20 tanks, 62 armored fighting vehicles, and 532 transport vehicles in the Pokrovsk direction.
On November 16, Russia lost 117 personnel in the Pokrovsk sector in one day, along with one artillery system, 15 drones, four vehicles, and three special equipment units.

Russia is stripping other fronts in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia to reinforce Pokrovsk, which will be a better front than Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and sending fresh troops into assaults without proper registration or preparation.

The Ukrainian military added that they expect further advances from Russia in Pokrovsk, which is Russia’s top objective after Adviika, and promised to protect their land with whatever it takes.
Despite the Russia showing no sign of halting its advance, it relies on manpower over maneuver to sustain the offensive.
