The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a mixed weather forecast for the week of September 23–29, with most parts of the country expected to remain sunny and dry, while several counties brace for rain, chilly nights, and strong winds. In its forecast, Kenya Met said rainfall is expected over the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of northwestern Kenya.
Where It Will Rain
Counties likely to experience rainfall include:
Highlands West of the Rift Valley: Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, and Vihiga.
Lake Victoria Basin: Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori counties.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi): Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nairobi, and parts of Meru and Embu.

Northwestern Kenya: Turkana and parts of West Pokot.
The rain is expected mainly during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Kenya Met Predicts Sunshine and Rising Temperatures
Most regions in eastern, coastal, and northern Kenya will remain hot and dry. Daytime temperatures are expected to soar past 30°C in:
- Coastal counties: Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River.
- Northern Kenya: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, and Garissa.
- Northwestern Kenya: Turkana and parts of Samburu.
Cold Mornings and Chilly Nights
Parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and Mt. Kilimanjaro region will experience cooler conditions, especially in the early mornings and late nights.
Minimum temperatures are expected to drop below 10°C in areas such as:
- Nyahururu (Laikipia County)
- Nakuru, Narok, and Baringo (Central Rift)
- Kajiado (Mt. Kilimanjaro region)

Residents in these areas are advised to dress warmly and take precautions, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
Strong Winds in Coastal and Inland Regions
Strong winds blowing at over 25 knots are forecast in:
- Coastal counties: Especially Kilifi and Lamu.
- Southeastern lowlands: Taita Taveta, Kitui, and Makueni.
- Northeastern Kenya: Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera.
- Northwestern Kenya: Turkana and northern West Pokot.

Wettest location: Kitale (Trans Nzoia County) recorded 76.4 mm over the week, including 59.0 mm in just 24 hours on September 20.
Hottest location: Mandera peaked at a scorching 38.6°C on September 16.
