Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has handed majority authority to National Security Chief Ali Larijani amid escalating tensions with the U.S and Israel possible war.
Khamenei has also outlined contingency succession plans for government and military roles in case the top leaders, including himself, are killed.
Larijani now has the mandate to run key security, military, and diplomatic operations in the country.
Tehran has placed its military on high alert, including:
- Conducting strategic drills
- Temporarily closing the Strait of Hormuz
- Moving the missile systems into strategic positions
- Preparing domestic security forces to suppress unrest during wartime.

According to Iranian officials, Khamenei has delegated authority to Larijani to oversee preparation for potential U.S. and Israeli military action, and to manage domestic security measures, diplomatic efforts, and coordination with allied governments.

Lately, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued stern warnings relating to nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.
He has also deployed significant naval and air assets to the Middle East, warning of consequences if Iran does not agree to nuclear limitations.
In response, Tehran also warned that it will respond decisively to any attack and continues to insist its nuclear program is peaceful.
Iran temporarily closed parts of the Strait of Hormuz for live‑fire exercises by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Supreme Leader Khamenei warned that any conflict could have severe consequences beyond Iran’s borders.
Reports also indicate that Tehran has been advising and positioning allied groups, including Hezbollah, to prepare for possible conflict with Israel and the United States.
Officers from the IRGC have reportedly taken direct control of Hezbollah’s restructuring and strategic planning, signaling Tehran’s intent to coordinate regional operations in case of war.

Heightened Tension Between the U.S, Israel, and Iran
As heightened pressure mounts, indirect nuclear talks between Iranian and U.S. representatives continue, with both sides expressing limited progress.
Iran urged Washington to negotiate independently of Israeli influence, even as it prepares for the possibility that negotiations may fail.
Iranian leaders have repeatedly warned that any U.S. attack would spark broader conflict.
Khamenei himself suggested earlier this month that a U.S. offensive could trigger “a regional war,” urging resistance to external pressure.
The Supreme Leader also confronted President Trump’s repeated claims that the United States possesses the “strongest military force in the world.
“The US President keeps saying that they have the strongest military force in the world. The strongest military force in the world may at times be struck so hard that it cannot get up again,” claimed Khamenei.
He also threatened Trump that he would not be able to eliminate the Islamic Republic, something that has been attempted for 47 years.
“The US President has said that for 47 years, the United States hasn’t been able to eliminate the Islamic Republic. That is a good confession. I say,” You, too, will not be able to do this,” stated the supreme leader.
