Israel has declared a nationwide state of emergency, shutting down schools, banning all public gatherings, and ordering the closure of most workplaces in caution of retaliation from Iran following Israeli strikes on targets in Tehran.
On February 27, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that a fresh security assessment had prompted immediate changes to the Home Front Command’s civilian guidelines. By 8:00 a.m. on February 28, the entire nation moved from normal daily life to the most restrictive operating status short of full wartime lockdown.
“It was decided to shift all areas of the country from Full Activity to Essential Activity,” the IDF said, emphasizing that the posture is meant to protect civilians should Iran respond to the strike.
New Restrictions Take Effect
Under the new measures, all schools, universities, youth programs, and private classes will be suspended across the country. Public gatherings of any size are banned, and most workplaces must remain closed. Only critical sectors such as hospitals, emergency services, utilities, security forces, and essential food supply operations are permitted to continue.

The tightened restrictions follow fears that Iran may retaliate after the strike in Tehran. Israeli officials have warned that Iran or allied groups could launch missiles or drones toward Israeli territory at any moment.
Those concerns intensified when air‑raid sirens were heard across several regions of Israel shortly before the emergency measures were announced. Mobile alerts were sent directly to citizens’ phones, urging everyone to remain close to reinforced rooms and protected shelters.
“This is a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the State of Israel,” the IDF noted, adding that residents should stay within quick reach of safe spaces until further instructions are issued.
The decision comes after weeks of rising regional tensions, fueled in part by the United States military buildup in the Middle East and stalled negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Reports indicate that Israeli and American officials had been closely monitoring what they viewed as increasing threats from Iran, ultimately culminating in Saturday’s preemptive strike
The IDF says the restrictions will remain in place if there is a risk of an immediate attack. The Home Front Command continues to issue real‑time alerts as the country awaits any sign of retaliation.

Why the Conflict Escalated Between Israel and Iran
Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated after Israel launched what it called a preemptive strike on targets in Tehran, saying the operation was intended to remove threats to the State of Israel.
Israel believes Iran is preparing actions that could endanger Israeli civilians, especially following weeks of rising hostility, a U.S. military buildup in the region, and stalled nuclear negotiations.
The two countries have been locked in a long-running confrontation rooted in Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its support for armed groups that oppose Israel, creating a cycle of mistrust and periodic military escalation
