Poland says it shot down drone objects that violated its airspace during Russia’s latest mass attack on Ukraine.
The overnight attack on Wednesday, September 10, in Ukraine began before midnight, with air-raid sirens warning of more than 100 drones.
Poland’s military confirmed in a statement that several of the intruding objects were neutralized, terming it an unprecedented violation of Polish airspace and an act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens.
“Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down. Searches and efforts to locate the potential crash sites of these objects are ongoing,” read the statement.
“With the safety of citizens in mind, we urge that in the event of observing an unknown object or its debris, do not approach, touch, or move it. Such elements may pose a threat and contain hazardous materials. They must be thoroughly inspected by the appropriate services.”
This is the first instance of a NATO member directly engaging Russian assets in its own airspace since the Ukraine war began in 2022.
Zelenskyy Breaks Silence, Condemns Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s overnight drone and missile attacks show Moscow is determined to keep escalating the war, warning it “continues to push the boundaries of what is possible.”
According to Zelensky, the strikes reached 15 regions, involving 415 drones of various types and more than 40 cruise and ballistic missiles.

He stressed that Russia advances its aggression step by step unless it faces a strong response.
“If there is no firm reaction, Moscow settles at the new level of escalation,” he said.
“Today there was another step of escalation – at least eight strike drones operated in the airspace of Poland. This was not a single accident but a deliberate attack,” he added.

Poland Warsaw Airport Closed
Poland’s largest airport, Chopin in Warsaw, temporarily shut down its airspace during the overnight incident. Operations later resumed, though officials cautioned travelers to expect delays and disruptions throughout the day.
Meanwhile, air raid alerts stretched through the night across much of Ukraine. The country’s air force said western regions bordering Poland—Volyn and Lviv among them—were under continuous warning.
In the United States, Senator Dick Durbin, a senior Democrat, warned that repeated incursions into NATO skies show Vladimir Putin is “testing our resolve to protect Poland and the Baltic nations.”
