President Donald Trump has confirmed renewed United States interest in Greenland following a phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that focused on security in the Arctic and the strategic role of the vast North Atlantic island.
In a statement on his Truth Social Platform, Trump said he had a “very good” telephone call with Mark Rutte. According to Trump, Rutte agreed to a meeting with various parties in Davos, Switzerland.
The hub is often used for high-level diplomatic and political engagements alongside the World Economic Forum.
A Defiant Trump
In the statement, Trump described Greenland as imperative for National and World Security, and the U.S will not opt for any other option.
“As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back. On that, everyone agrees.”
Trump underscored his previous assertion that the United States of America is “the most powerful country anywhere on the globe, and by far”.
He credited that status to military rebuilding efforts initiated during his first term.
“The United States of America is the most powerful country anywhere on the globe, by far,” Trump said.

“We are the only power that can ensure peace throughout the world,” Trump said, stating that peace is maintained quite simply through strength.
NATO Engagement Continues
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed the call with Trump, stating publicly that the two discussed the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic.
Rutte said the discussions would continue and confirmed plans to meet Trump in Davos.
The Arctic has become a focus of increased NATO attention as allied nations step up air patrols, maritime surveillance, and infrastructure protection in the High North.
Greenland’s location along polar routes has elevated its role in alliance planning.
NATO has identified the High North as a critical operational area due to its proximity to transatlantic sea lanes and polar air routes.
NATO officials have consistently stated that allied activity in Greenland is conducted in coordination with Danish authorities and within existing legal frameworks.
The alliance has not announced any new mission, deployment, or command structure related to Greenland following the Trump‑Rutte call.
Denmark Stands Firm
Denmark has stepped up diplomatic and military activity around Greenland following renewed U.S. statements on the island’s strategic importance and high‑level talks between President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed that the country has increased coordination with NATO allies on Arctic security and raised the possibility of a broader NATO surveillance or security mission in Greenland during meetings with alliance officials.
Danish authorities have also reinforced their military presence on the island.
Additional Danish troops and equipment were deployed to Greenland in mid‑January as part of ongoing security exercises and contingency planning.
The deployments were carried out in coordination with Greenlandic authorities and allied partners, according to the Danish Defence Command.
Denmark has rejected any suggestion of transferring sovereignty over Greenland.
Danish officials have stated publicly that Greenland is not for sale and that decisions regarding the island’s future rest with the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people.
EU officials have also confirmed coordination with Denmark on potential political and economic responses following U.S. tariff threats linked to Greenland.
