Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed plans to purchase 25 Patriot air-defense systems from the United States, as the country continues to urgently push to strengthen its skies amid Putin’s Russia’s intense missile and drone attacks.
The deal, which is expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue, will significantly benefit American defense manufacturers and marks one of the largest single orders of Patriot systems in recent years.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the decision in a detailed statement on his official X account, stating that Ukraine’s air defense capabilities remain a critical vulnerability in the ongoing war.
“We’ve been talking about closing the sky since day one of this war. We understand that it’s our vulnerability. Putin had a huge number of missiles, while we had very few air-defense systems and only a small remaining stock of Soviet-era missiles.”
Zelenskyy stressed that modern warfare demands multi-tiered protection, including interceptor drones and advanced missile shields, to counter threats from Russian, Iranian, and even North Korean weaponry.
Staring Financial Burden
Zelenskyy acknowledged the enormous financial weight of the deal but stressed that Ukraine has already set aside funds for the purchase.
“Today, we want to order 25 Patriot systems from the United States. For us, that’s a clear budget, and we understand the financial scope.”
While he did not disclose the exact figure, defense analysts estimate the cost at $25–$30 billion, (Ksh3.2B to Ksh3.8B) given that a single Patriot battery can range from $1 billion to $1.2 billion (Ksh129B to Ksh155B).
This does not include additional expenses for training, maintenance, and interceptor missiles, which cost about $3–$4 million each (Ksh386.7B to Ksh515.6B).
Zelenskyy also pointed out that the agreement is still missing some elements and called on European partners to help bridge the gap.
“European colleagues can help us here. They can lend us their systems now and then take back once they arrive from the manufacturers.”
He warned against delays, noting that Patriot systems take years to produce.
“These systems are produced over several years, and we would not want to wait.”
The financial commitment is part of Ukraine’s long-term strategy to modernize its air-defense network and signals deeper security ties with Washington.
For U.S. defense firms, the deal represents a significant economic boost, with billions of dollars flowing into the sector at a time of heightened global demand for advanced weapons.
Zelenskyy’s Broader Strategy
In recent months, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shifted focus from short-term defense to long-term resilience.
He launched a major push for interceptor drone production, setting targets of up to 1,000 units daily to counter Russian UAV attacks.

Ukraine is also advancing joint drone development with partners, including the UK, with the OCTOPUS model.
President Vodomyr Zelenskyy urged Europe to build a unified defense force, warning against over-reliance on U.S. support.
Economic reforms are central to his plan: he called for tax changes to attract foreign investment and signed legislation to improve asset recovery transparency.
Energy security remains critical for Zelenskyy, and he has appealed for the urgent reconstruction of power infrastructure before winter, promoting investment in LNG and renewables to reduce Russian leverage.
