The United States (US) State Department has authorized the departure of non-emergency government personnel and their family members from Israel due to heightened security risks.
In an advisory issued on February 27, 2026, the U.S. Department of State said the move was prompted by evolving safety concerns.
The department urged U.S. citizens to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights remain available, noting that increased regional tensions could disrupt air travel.
U.S. Citizens Asked to Leave Israel
The embassy stated that may further restrict or prohibit U.S. government employees and their family members from traveling to certain areas of Israel.
The areas include, the Old City of Jerusalem, and the West Bank.
“In response to security incidents and without advance notice, the U.S. Embassy may further restrict or prohibit U.S. government employees and their family members from traveling to certain areas of Israel, the Old City of Jerusalem, and the West Bank. Persons may wish to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights are available,” read part of the advisory.
Further, Americans were advised to reconsider travelling to Israel and the West Bank due to terrorism and civil unrest.
US citizens were also warned against travelling to Gaza because of terrorism and armed conflict, as well as areas near the Gaza perimeter.

Additional no-travel zones include areas within four kilometres of the Lebanese and Syrian borders due to continued military activity, and within 2.4 kilometres of the Egyptian border, except for the Taba crossing, which remains open.
The State Department cautioned that terrorist groups and lone actors continue to plot possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, targeting tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls and government facilities.
It warned that the security situation remains complex and can change rapidly, with violence potentially occurring without warning.

Security and Safety Alerts
The security alert stated that terrorist groups continue to target U.S. citizens abroad.
Attacks have been increasingly carried out using simple methods such as knives, firearms, and vehicles, often aimed at unprotected or vulnerable locations.
Potential targets of terrorism attacks include:

High-profile public events, including sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday celebrations, and other gatherings

Hotels, restaurants, and clubs popular with tourists

Shopping centers, markets, and other commercial areas
