Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who also serves as chairperson of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, has publicly criticised unnamed government officials for what she called “disrespectful” and “divisive” actions against elected leaders in her county.
Speaking at a public event over the weekend, Mbarire said certain officers from Nairobi were holding secret meetings in Embu aimed at undermining local leadership.
“Some people from the government that I fight for every day have already started planning for me,” she said. “Those officers from Nairobi were coming to hold meetings in Embu to fight elected leaders.”
Mbarire on Respect for Leaders
The governor, a supporter of President William Ruto, expressed outrage over what she described as a betrayal by elements within the administration she helped bring to power.
“They don’t have respect,” she said. “If they continue, I will mention them.”

In a direct challenge, Mbarire questioned the loyalty of those targeting her leadership, highlighting her role in supporting Ruto during his campaign.
“Where were you when we were fighting for Ruto here in Embu?” she asked. “I dare you to come to Embu again.”
She urged dialogue over conflict, saying leaders deserve mutual respect.
“I am a leader, and you will respect me. If there is a problem, call us to talk,” Mbarire said. “If you don’t, we will not respect you too.”
Khalwale’s Response to Cecily Mbarire
Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale has responded to Governor Cecily Mbarire following recent changes in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leadership, suggesting the moves were politically motivated.
“Out of the blue, Governor Cecily Mbarire was elevated to national chairperson, while Cleophas Malala was pulled from the ANC party and appointed secretary-general of UDA,” Khalwale said.
“Ostensibly, this was to get rid of Senator Muthama and teach me a lesson — both of us being founding members of UDA,” he added.
Khalwale claimed the party is now facing internal turmoil.

Malala Joins Gachagua

Among those named in the party are former UDA and Jubilee heavyweights, including ex-UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala, who was named deputy party leader.
