Inside Amina Abdi’s Journey to Becoming Kenya’s Popular Media Personality

Amina Abdi Rabar is a celebrated Kenyan TV host, radio presenter, singer, emcee, and songwriter who has become a household name in the country’s entertainment and media industry.

Known for her vibrant personality and ability to connect with audiences, Amina has carved out a successful career that spans radio, television, and music.

Early Life and Education

Born on June 28, 1989, in Nairobi, Kenya, Amina spent much of her early life in Eastleigh and Kawangware.

She hails from the Borana community, with her mother from Isiolo and her father from Moyale.

Amina grew up alongside her sister, Shukri Abdi.

She attended The Kenya High School, where she completed her secondary education and sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2006.

Personal Life

Amina is married to John Rabar, popularly known as DJ John, the CEO and co-owner of Homeboyz Radio.

Together, they are proud parents to a son named Tumi.

Despite her busy schedule, Amina often credits her family for being her greatest support system.

Career Journey of Amina

Amina’s entry into the media industry began after she left Kenya High School.

She was hired by Homeboyz Radio, marking the beginning of her broadcasting career.

She later transitioned to television, joining Maisha Magic East before moving to K24, where she hosted the Alfajiri Show.

Her hosting skills and charisma quickly gained traction, cementing her position as one of Kenya’s most promising media talents.

She then joined Capital FM in Nairobi, where she hosted the Breakfast Show.

However, her big break came when she replaced Larry Madowo on NTV’s The Trend after his departure.

Amina became the face of the popular Friday evening show, holding the role for eight years before officially announcing her departure on September 5, 2025.

Her career has also taken her on the international stage.

Amina co-hosted the 7th Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) alongside Nigerian media personality Ik Osakidouwa, a proud moment she shared with her fans on Instagram.

In addition to her television work, she has emceed major events, including Gordon’s Funfair, Coke Studio Africa, The Turn Up on Maisha Magic East (alongside DJ Joe Mfalme), and Honey TV’s Wawu, That’s My Dress, Kenya.

Beyond her media career, Amina has ventured into music.

She has released singles such as Swag, Paint Town Red, On Me, and Grown and Sexy.

Her collaborations with top Kenyan artists, including Octopizzo, Jay A, rapper Lon Jon, and K-Letta, further showcase her versatility as a creative.

Awards and Recognition

Amina’s impact on the media and entertainment space has earned her numerous accolades.

In 2018, she was listed among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans for her contributions to the media and entertainment industry.

She also won the East Africa’s Most Stylish Female Host award at the Regional Fashion Awards.

Additionally, she was nominated for Media Personality of the Year at the Africa Choice Awards, cementing her influence across the continent.

From her humble beginnings in Eastleigh and Kawangware to hosting some of the biggest shows on television and radio, Amina Abdi Rabar’s journey is one of resilience, talent, and determination.

Whether on stage, on screen, or on air, she continues to inspire a new generation of women in media while proving that passion, consistency, and hard work always pay off.
