A police officer has been interdicted after a woman miscarried while in police custody at Rwanyambo Police Post, Nyandarua County.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the Service is deeply saddened to inform the public of the unfortunate incident.
Nyanga said investigations have been launched by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), in collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He stated that the Police Post Commander has been suspended immediately to facilitate investigations.
“To ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation, the officer in charge of Rwanyambo Police Post has been interdicted with immediate effect,” Nyanga said.
He reaffirmed NPS’s steadfast commitment to serving and protecting the public while strictly upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.
He added that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
However, Nyanga did not provide details about the woman’s identity, the cause of the miscarriage or how long she had been in custody at the time of the incident.
Victim Arrested by Employer
The reports of the woman miscarrying in custody broke on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Her family said she was seven months pregnant and was reportedly arrested after her employer filed a complaint saying Ksh18,000 from a day’s sales was missing.
The woman’s sister revealed she had repeatedly been arrested after the accusations.

She said the family managed to raise Ksh6,000 after it was discovered that only Ksh9,000 was missing.
They pleaded with the police to release but their request was ignored as the officers demanded the full amount.
“I pleaded with the police to release my sister as we tried to raise the money on Wednesday, but they declined. I pleaded with them, informing them that my sister had other children waiting at home and we had a sick mother to take care of, but they refused,” the victim’s sister stated.

Complaints to the Police
Additionally, the sister said she complained of severe abdominal pain and pleaded for medical attention while in custody.
However, her complaints were reportedly ignored by the officers.
The victim called her sister at around 1 am, telling her that she needed help as she was bleeding heavily.
She rushed to the station but was reportedly chased away.
Further, the sister said she went to the station the next morning but was still blocked from seeing her sister.
The victim later learnt that she had suffered a miscarriage, and the police held her in custody.
“I came back to the station early in the morning, but I was still denied access to her. But I was still denied access to her but learned that she had suffered a miscarriage during the night and had remained in the police cell,” the sister added.
