Benson Makali Mulu is a seasoned legislator and Kenyan politician currently representing Kitui Central Constituency in Kenya’s National Assembly.
Early Life and Educational Background
Born around 1965, his given name “Makali” (Kamba for “bricks”) carries a legacy of survival, as his mother endured the loss of three children before giving birth to him.
He attended Mulundi Primary School from 1973, where he excelled in Standard 7 with 26 out of 36 marks after completing his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1979.
He then joined Kyagwathya Secondary School for his O-Level Certificate from 1980 to 1983, followed by St. Charles Lwanga School for his A-Level Certificate between 1984 and 1985.
In 1987, Mulu enrolled at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1990 and continued at the same university for a Master of Arts in Economics, completed in 1992.
In 1995, he pursued a Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation of Public Programmes and Projects at the University of East Anglia in the UK.
From 2009 to 2015, he undertook a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics at Kenyatta University.
Career
Professional career
Makali served as an Economist in the Ministry of Planning & Finance from 1991 to 1997, applying macroeconomic expertise to national planning.

He then joined the Constituency Development Trust Fund (CDTF) from 1997 to 2004 as a Monitoring & Evaluation Officer, followed by a stint as a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at GJLOS (2004–2007).
From 2007 to 2012, he practiced as an independent consultant specializing in project management and evaluation.
In 2013, he transitioned to full-time politics, winning the Kitui Central parliamentary seat.
Since then, he has served in the 11th, 12th, and currently the 13th Parliaments, aligning with the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya party.
In Parliament, he has served on several committees, including:
- Budget and Appropriations Committee
- Finance and Planning Committee
- Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee
In 2024, he was named to a high-profile mediation committee tasked with resolving the legislative stalemate over the County Governments Additional Allocations Bill, lodged between the National Assembly and Senate.
Known for his emphasis on human capital and infrastructure, Makali has disbursed significant bursaries, amounting to Ksh47 million, to support over 12,500 students, reinforcing his commitment to education.
