A family in Kirinyaga County is in shock after their son, a Form Four candidate, missed his first Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination after allegedly being drugged by unknown individuals on his way to school.
The student, Wycliffe Muthii, who attends St. Philips Day Mixed Secondary School, left his home in Kiaga Village, Kanyekiine Ward, early in the morning to sit for his national exams but never arrived at school.
He was later found disoriented in Makuyu, Murang’a County, more than 60 kilometers away.
According to his mother, Mercy Wambura, her son woke up at dawn, prepared tea, and left home at around 6 a.m., excited to take his first exam.

Hours later, she received a distressing call from the school asking why Muthii had not shown up.

“I was shocked when the school called to ask where my son was as the exams were about to start,” Wambura said. “I couldn’t believe it because I had just wished him good luck that morning.”
Wambura said she immediately went to the school and then reported the matter to police when teachers confirmed Muthii had not arrived.
“We started looking for him everywhere, but we couldn’t find him,” she recounted. “At around ten o’clock at night, I got a call from the police saying they had found a boy named Wycliffe at Makuyu Police Station.”
What Happened to Him
When the family arrived in Makuyu, they found Muthii weak, confused, and without his belongings.
“He told me he didn’t remember what had happened,” Wambura said tearfully. “He only remembers waking up in a pit without his clothes or shoes. Everything he had was gone.”

Muthii’s father, Julius Wamugunda, said teachers even visited their home to verify whether the student had left that morning.
When news of the teenager’s disappearance spread, villagers, led by his aunt Roselyn Warui, launched a search and alerted nearby police stations.
“While we were still looking for him, I received a call from Makuyu Police Station asking if I knew a boy named Wycliffe,” Warui said. “When I spoke to him, he sounded confused. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”
The family later took the boy to Sagana Sub-County Hospital for medical treatment.
An emotional Wambura has called for justice and questioned why anyone would harm her son on such an important day.
“Who would drug my son on his way to do his exams?” she asked.
Police in Makuyu and Kirinyaga have since launched investigations into the incident.
