Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata has revealed that he will not file cases against people who destroyed the roundabout located in the town’s Central Business District (CBD) during Gen Z-led protests.
Governor Kang’ata noted that the county will forgive all those involved in the vandalism during anti-Finance Bill demonstrations
“The county will not press charges against the vandals. We live and forgive,” the governor said.
In a statement on July 7, Kang’ata stated that his administration spent Ksh1.5 million to build the roundabout contrary to reports that he had spent more on the project.
“The vandalized CBD roundabout had cost Ksh1.5M to renovate, not a higher amount contrary to rumors,” he said.
Additionally, Kang’ata said he conducted the Inua Mkulima Programme, which was previously canceled due to protests led by Gen Z.
“Did a repeat Township Ward Kiharu Inua Mkulima Programme. It had aborted due to Gen Z demonstrations,” Kang’ata said.
DCI Goes After Looters & Thieves
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a manhunt for individuals involved in unlawful activities during the protests.
In a statement on July 2, the DCI asked the public to help identify people whose images were retrieved from CCTV cameras as they looted and stole from businesses in different towns across the country.
“The individuals whose images/photos appear below are wanted by the police for their unlawful activities during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations. We therefore advise them to report to the nearest police station for further police action,” the DCI said.

The DCI stated that security forces across the country singled out suspects found engaging in criminal activities under the guise of protesting and took them into custody.
In Nairobi and its environs, 204 suspects were apprehended, 35 in the Coastal region, 18 in Nyanza, and 11 and 4 in Rift Valley and Eastern regions respectively.
Additionally, the DCI deployed scrupulous investigators across the affected regions to pursue suspects captured on CCTV cameras and mobile phone recordings violently robbing, stealing, and destroying properties and businesses of innocent citizens.

Business Owners & the Public
The DCI reminded culprits that they shall bear the consequences of their actions individually. It assured Kenyans that the processes involved in the investigations conforms to the demands of the criminal justice system.
Meanwhile, the Investigative Agency appealed to property and business owners whose premises are installed with CCTV cameras, and which may have captured criminal activities being perpetrated, to grant access to their Imaging and Acoustic Unit detectives to retrieve the footage in the pursuit of justice for the affected persons.
Those with useful footage in their gadgets were requested to volunteer and forward them to any DCI offices across the country.
