Azimio Leaders Raise Concern Over Alleged Attempts to Blackmail Raila

A section of Azimio leaders have issued a strong condemnation against Kenya Kwanza (KK) leaders in what they perceive as the use of blackmail tactics targeting Raila Odinga.

The coalition’s denouncement comes amidst escalating tensions within Kenya’s political sphere in relation to Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship role.

Eugene Wamalwa, a co-principal within Azimio, voiced the coalition’s stance, decrying the alleged attempts to manipulate Odinga’s candidacy.

“Our message to Kenya Kwanza is, stop blackmailing Raila Odinga over AUC Bid,” stated Wamalwa. 

The accusations of blackmail have injected a new dimension of contention into the already charged political environment, with senior Kenya Kwanza leaders pointing out the high stakes involved in Odinga’s pursuit of the AUC Chairmanship.

The call for action on the flood crisis was reiterated by Eugene Wamalwa, who stressed the need for immediate government intervention on the flood crisis.

“Declare the current flood crisis a national disaster!” said Wamalwa.

The remarks by Wamalwa come amid a flurry of controversy sparked by Raila Odinga’s recent remarks on evaluation of President Ruto’s Cabinet.

While defending Odinga’s critique, Azimio leaders have positioned themselves against what they perceive as attempts to stifle their voices.

“Azimio will not be gagged and will remain the voice of the voiceless, silent, suffering majority of Kenyans,” Wamalwa commented.

Kalonzo Calls for More Practical Govt Approach

Speaking in Mombasa, Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka also weighed in on the raging floods, calling the government to be more practical in their mitigation approaches.

“We have to be more practical and declare floods a national disaster, as we talk already 219 persons have died due to the ongoing floods,” said Kalonzo Musyoka.

Kalonzo further pointed out that Raila Odinga by virtue of being the party leader of Azimio shares absolute right to criticize the government on any issue without blackmail over AUC Chairmanship role.

Raila Criticism of Government Flood Response

Opposition leader Raila Odinga escalated his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration regarding its handling of the severe rains causing widespread devastation across the country.

Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, is now urging for the flood crisis affecting numerous counties to be officially declared a national disaster.

He is also pushing back against the government’s approach of forcibly relocating residents from high-risk areas without a comprehensive resettlement plan in place.

During a visit to Mukuru slums in Nairobi, Odinga expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the relentless downpours, which have resulted in loss of life and displaced thousands.

He specifically condemned President Ruto’s directive to evacuate residents from flood-prone regions without ensuring proper housing alternatives beforehand.

“We’ve emphasized that they shouldn’t attempt to demolish homes and relocate people. People should be provided with housing first before any demolitions take place… citizens are not animals,” said Odinga.
