Chief Kadhi Ahmed, while speaking in Mombasa on Sunday, May 1st, 2022, announced that all Muslims across the country would be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.
Eid ul Fitr, the Festival of Fast-breaking, is a significant holiday celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan – the Islamic holy month of fasting and prayer. Moreover, Eid ul Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar.
Chief Kadhi Ahmed stated that May 2nd, 2022 marks the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr, and urged all Muslims to pray for Kenya and the world. He later wished everyone ‘Eid Mubarak.’
During Eid celebrations, Muslims gather in mosques or open spaces to offer two units of prayer known as “Rakat.” The prayers are then followed by a sermon, where the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for everyone across the globe.
Nonetheless, Eid-ul-Fitr Festival will be observed nationwide on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, as declared by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i in a gazette notice. This declaration of a public holiday exercises the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act in the Kenyan Constitution.
