The National Police Service has urged members of the public to the proceedings of the inauguration of President-elect William Ruto from their homes after Kasarani stadium filled to capacity.
In a statement on Tuesday, September 13, Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said Kasarani stadium, where the event is being held, was filled to capacity as early as 5:00 am.
“In anticipation of being part of history, Kenyans have thronged to the venue in large numbers. By 5.00 am this morning, the venue had already filled to capacity, as more people continue to troop to the venue,” Shioso said.
“To avoid logistical challenges, this is to request the public to make alternative arrangements to view the proceedings, especially from the comfort of their homes.”
Earlier, several people were reported injured in a stampede outside the stadium as thousands of Ruto supporters attempted to force their way into the venue.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said on Sunday said some 60,000 are expected to attend the event.
A total of 20 heads of state have also confirmed attendance.
“We will have limited invitations of 2,500 VIPs on the dais. We have confirmations from presidents and heads of state across Africa totalling 20 in number,” Kibicho said.
“We will have all the protocols associated with visiting heads of state ready by foreign affairs and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and all those people who are concerned with the arrival of dignitaries.”
