Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been re-elected as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors.
Sources from the CoG intimated to The Kenya Times that governors reached a consensus to hand Waiguru a second term at the helm of the governor’s council.
Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi will deputize Waiguru after his election to the position.
The governors also elected leaders of the various executive and technical committees.
Following her reelection, the governor has vowed to focus on fully devolving functions and resources and increasing revenue allocation to counties.
In addition, Kirinyaga governor has committed to supporting counties in improving own source revenue and promoting the implementation of Universal Healthcare.
Her reelection came a year after she was elected as the Council’s Chair in September 2022.
Prior to her election as the Chair, the governor had served as the Council’s Deputy Chairperson between 2017 and 2019.
The CoG is an umbrella body for all governors which is aimed at promoting visionary leadership at the devolved units.
In addition, the CoG acts as a collective voice for the governors especially in agitating for their grievances.
Waiguru’s record as CoG Chair
Throughout her stint, Waiguru has led in championing grievances facing county governments including timely disbursements of county funds from the national government.
However, unlike previous CoG Chairs- her tenure has seen a harmonious relationship between governors and the national government.
In addition to her role as the spokesperson of governors, Waiguru has earned recognition for her track record in Kirinyaga.
