Viral Mganga Who Cures Tax Issues Catches KRA Attention

Posters of magicians advertising a range of peculiar services on electricity poles, walls, dust bins and stones are common in Kenya. However, one such poster from a mganga identified as Dr Njoroge was brought to the attention of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on Friday, October 13.

Dr. Njoroge’s poster went viral on various social media platforms, enticing Kenyans that he had the powers to fix a concoction of burning issues. 

Notably, the man mastered top issues within the contemporary society, ranging from Higher Education Loans Board – HELB to mobile loans from popular digital lenders like Tala and Branch.

Again, the Mganga hatari as he described himself claimed to have powers to fix all money-related problems, wealth, and business.

At the same time, he claimed to understand how to place bets and win jackpots.  However, the icing on the cake was the fact that Dr Njoroge claimed to cure tax-related problems. 

“Dr. Njoroge, a powerful witchdoctor that treats business, wealth, money-related cases, pay raise at work, KRA, Mshwari loans, Sportpesa, CRB, HELB, Tala Branchj Loans.  

Nonetheless, it was the mention of KRA that saw netizens seek the opinion of the taxman. Some wanted to know if KRA was working in cahoots with the said mganga.

Others thought that Dr Njoroge was part of over 1,000 hawk-eyed Revenue Assistants that the taxman deployed across the country to ramp up its revenue collection efforts.

Additionally, the post had a mobile number for those interested in trying out Dr Njoroge’s magical menu. 

KRA on Mganga hatari 

In a quick rejoinder, KRA wished Kenyans a good weekend ahead and reminded the public to contact the authority once done with Dr. Njoroge.

Moreover, KRA, the only body mandated to collect tax in the country, shared a mobile number for any enquiries.

“Wadau, mambo ni kujuliana hali. Tunawatakia weekend poa. Ukimalizana na Dr. Njoro hii weekend, piga hii namba 0711099999 utapata nafuu Zaidi,” read the tweet.

The statement loosely translates to “Guys it is good to check up on each other, we wish you all a good weekend. However, once you are done with DR. Njoroge over the weekend reach out to us on 0711099999 for full recovery.”

What Kenyans said

Dr. Njoroge’s poster popped up at a time Kenyans are grappling with the high cost of living, tax burden and unemployment. 

On the other hand, some cheekily asked the taxman to consider the services of the mganga to help fix several state parastatals making losses and on the brink of total collapse. 

A tweep on X with the account, @ggiste responded, “kama Dr.Njoro anaweza atatua shida za KRA mbona msimuandike kazi”, read the tweet which loosely translates to “If Dr Njoroge can solve KRA issues why don’t you employ him.”

Others wondered if witchdoctors across the country pay taxes with KRA always employing strategies to widen its tax bracket, including the informal sector, where mganga hatari belongs. 

At the same time a tweep shared his concerns if the witchdoctors’ pay taxes. Koech with the handle @koecharlesk tweeted “Do these ‘doctors’ pay tax?”

KRA Mandate

What’s more, KRA is a government parastatal established by an Act of Parliament, Chapter 469 of the laws of Kenya, which became effective on 1st July 1995.

The Authority is charged with collecting revenue on behalf of the government of Kenya.

Also, the body is mandated to assess, collect, and account for all revenues in accordance with the written laws and the specified provisions of the written laws.

Likewise, it advises on matters relating to the administration and collection of revenue under the written laws or the specified provisions of the written laws.
