Former Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Dr Abbas Gullet has declared interest in the presidency of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC).
Gullet, who was at the helm of the Kenya Red Cross from May 2005 to December 2019, stated that with his 5 decades experience in humanitarian work, he was fit to the job.
“I am honored to announce my candidacy for the position of IFRC President. With over 5 decades in the Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement, starting as a volunteer, I’m committed to making a global impact,” he said.

The Journey of Gullet
Gullet began his journey in Red Cross red Cresent movement over 50 years ago as volunteer 11 years before becoming staff.

“My journey with the Red Cross red Cresent movement began over five decades ago when I became a volunteer in a local branch in Mombasa in Kenya before moving on to be a paid staff at the headquarters in 1985 as a National Youth officer,” he narrated.
In 1991, he became a youth officer for Africa at IFRC in Geneva before becoming the head of the Youth Department in Geneva.
After that, he went to the field where he became a delegate holding various position in many missions in various parts of the world in Africa, Asia, Pacific and in Europe in 2001.
He was seconded to the Kenya Red Cross Society by the IFRC to become the acting Secretary General.
Further, in the position, he helped to reform and transform the Society, and later became deputy secretary General in 2002.
As Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General
Subsequently he served as Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society for 14 years.
Also, Dr. Gullet served as a vice president for Africa for IFRC for 3 years and as a member of the standing commission from 2019 to date.

Gullet asked for support from Kenyans to vote him as the next IFRC President.
“‘I request your support and your vote as the next IFRC president hold me accountable for delivering on these commitments thank you together we can make a positive impact on those in need worldwide,’ he made the appeal.
