Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have seized 32.5 tones of contraband milk powder through a well calculated operation.
Through a statement released on January 4, DCI revealed that the operation was conducted by detectives attached to the Operations Support Unit (OSU).
“An operation conducted to nab cartels selling contraband milk powder has resulted in the seizure of over 32.5 tonnes of the same,” read part of the statement.
The contraband consignment was recovered at a Godown located along the Eastern Bypass.
According to the statement, the detectives first launched the sting operation by approaching an unsuspecting known broker in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area by the name Ali Noor.
Ali Noor, DCI explains, posed as a potential buyer and directed the detectives to a businessman in the Kamakis area along the Eastern Bypass.
It is at Kamakis where things were to unfold for both the detectives and the unsuspecting dealers.
Detectives recover consignment
Upon arrival, a Mitsubishi truck loaded with an agreed 150 bags of the milk powder- each weighing 25Kg- approached.

According to the statement, the undercover cop had agreed to pay Ks16,500 per bag with the dealer, in the transaction totaling to Ksh2,475,000.
Joseph Waweru, the man believed to be the main supplier of the black-market milk arrived alongside the truck driving a Toyota Prado.
Upon the arrival of the consignment, the other detectives who had been trailing the truck and the Prado covertly pounced on the two suspects, Waweru and Noor.
However, the youthful truck driver managed to escape narrowly as he beetled off like a terrified rat.

The detectives further revealed that after interrogation, the team managed to trace the Godown owned by the main suspect.
Notably, the trace led the OSU team at Twin Industrial Park Godowns within Ruai area off the Eastern Bypass.
Furthermore, the detectives managed to recover 1150 bags each weighing 25Kg of milk powder, containing five different brands.
Also, the operation led to the recovery of another 289 bags each weighing 25Kg of Maize corn starch.
In addition, the detectives recovered a truck inside the Godown loaded with 17 empty drums suspected to be used in transport Ethanol.
According to the statements, the suspects have since been placed in custody as further investigations continue.
