A collision between a truck and a trailer late at night on August 24 along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway brought traffic to a standstill near Kanga bridge, between Voi and Mutitu.
The crash, which occurred in the middle of the night, resulted in a complete shutdown of both lanes, leading to a massive traffic snarl-up.
As of the morning of August 25, authorities had not yet confirmed any fatalities or injuries.
In a statement released early by the Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association said, “An accident has occurred at Kanga bridge between Mutitu and Voi. No traffic movement on both sides.”
The crash came days after Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, released a report pointing to dilapidated infrastructure, poor vehicle maintenance, and reckless driving as the leading causes of road accidents.
Concerns over Road Accidents
“Our findings underscore that poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and vehicle defects remain the leading causes of fatalities,” Chirchir said.

He added that the government is prioritizing the treatment and improvement of hazardous road sections in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), stating the importance of adherence to KS 372:2019 vehicle standards.
With schools reopening nationwide, the ministry has also issued a renewed call for caution on the roads.
“Drivers and motorcyclists must ensure their vehicles are well maintained, appropriately licensed, and that they drive slowly around educational institutions,” Chirchir said.
Another Accident along Mombasa Road
This comes just a day after fifteen people were injured in a late-night accident at Kibarani in Mombasa after a public service vehicle collided with a cargo truck.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, causing panic among residents before emergency teams moved in to manage the situation.
The Kenya Red Cross, in its initial statement, confirmed the accident and reported that those injured were quickly rescued by members of the public who rushed them to nearby hospitals.

“A road traffic accident involving a PSV matatu and a cargo container has occurred at Kibarani, just after Ug Holdings, Mombasa County,” the statement read in part.
It further announced that its teams had assisted in clearing the scene to ease traffic flow.
“Update: Fifteen people sustained injuries and were taken to health facilities by well-wishers. Thankfully, no lives were lost. The scene has been cleared,” the follow-up statement noted.
About 50 people have died in road accidents since the start of August, including 27 people who died at the Coptic Roundabout in Kisumu when an AIC Naki High School bus rolled into a ditch on August 8.
