The United States and Iran are discussing terms for a potential 45-day ceasefire amid the ongoing war involving Israel, the US, and Iran.

According to Axios, the discussion aims to ease tensions and prevent further escalation of the conflict. The proposed ceasefire could also be extended if additional time is needed for negotiations.

Meanwhile, the negotiations are reportedly taking place through mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, as well as through direct text messages exchanged between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran and the US Discuss How to End the Ongoing War

According to the Axios, the talk is also set to focus on finding a permanent solution to end the war.

The Iranian officials also noted that the chances of reaching even a partial agreement within the next 48 hours remain slim, but the discussion will minimize further destruction.

This comes hours after Trump threatened to strike Iran’s civilian power plants and bridges if it did not meet a new deadline of Tuesday to open the Strait of Hormuz at 8. p.m Eastern time.

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F–kin’ Strait, you crazy b-stards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!” said Trump.

Trump also claimed in an interview with Fox News on Sunday that he was negotiating with leaders and there was a “good chance” of a deal by Monday.

“If they don’t make a deal and fast, I’m considering blowing everything up and taking over the oil,” he said.

Although he has made several similar threats to bomb the power plants, he has only postponed or moved deadlines after claiming progress in talks with Iranian leaders.

Iran also acknowledged that messages have been passed between the two sides, including through Pakistan, but insisted that it has not entered into peace talks.

Trump Denies Sending Ground Troops

Elsewhere, Trump said on Sunday, April 5, that the ongoing conflict should conclude in days, not weeks, warning that without a deal, the US would bomb the entire country.

He made the statements in an interview with ABC News White House Correspondent Rachel Scott and denied that American ground troops are necessary at this time, but did not rule them out completely.

When asked if he would extend any deadline for Iran to reach an agreement, Trump replied that he did not want to discuss it.

He also described his outreach to NATO allies regarding the Strait of Hormuz as a test and added that after their respond he did not want to push ‘hard’.
