Clara Luvanga has emerged as one of the most prominent young forwards in African women’s football transfer history.
Her rise to prominence comes after a high-profile move from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr to Washington Spirit in the United States.
The 21-year-old Tanzanian international signed a four-year contract with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club, where she will play for Washington through the 2029 season.
In an interview, Clara said that although she joined the team with the season underway, she was ready to work with the team, which she described as being in a strong position during her contract.
“I am very excited to join the Washington Spirit and to take on this new challenge in the NWSL. I know I am arriving with the season already underway, but I am m really excited to play in a new league and a new country. The team is in a strong position, and I want to help however I can between now and the playoffs. Go Spirit!” Clara Luvanga stated while confirming the transfer on September 9.
Early Life and Breakthrough in Tanzania
Clara Cleitus Luvanga was born on February 25, 2005.
According to the rising star, her football career began at Yanga Princess, the women’s side associated with Tanzanian giants Young Africans.
During the 2022 African qualifiers for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, Luvanga became the leading scorer, scoring 10 goals in six matches.
Following her goals during the matches, Tanzania secured its first qualification for the tournament in India.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) records Clara Luvanga as the qualifying campaign’s top scorer of the season.
Clara Luvanga’s performances also earned her several individual distinctions.
In 2022, Luvanga was nominated for the CAF African Best Young Player award.
She was named Tanzania Women’s Premier League Best Young Player for the 2021/22 season and Tanzania’s best female footballer for 2022/23.
Later in 2024, Luvanga made her senior debut for the Twiga Stars.

Clara Luvanga’s Football Career in Europe
In August 2023, Luvanga became the first Tanzanian woman to play professionally in Spain after joining DUX Logroño.
During her time with the club, she scored twice and made six appearances.
Later, she joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia in October 2023.
At Al-Nassr, Luvanga developed into one of the Saudi Women’s Premier League’s leading attacking players.
She helped the club win three successive league titles and added domestic and regional silverware, including the Saudi Women’s Cup, Saudi Women’s Super Cup and the 2026 WAFF Women’s Clubs Championship.
Her most notable individual campaign came in the 2025/26 season, when she scored 24 league goals in 14 matches and won the Saudi Women’s Premier League Golden Boot.
She also scored a hat-trick in the Saudi Women’s Super Cup final.

Move to Washington Spirit
Washington Spirit confirmed Luvanga’s signing on September 9, 2026, making her the first Tanzanian player in NWSL history.
The club’s Sporting Director, James Hocken, praised her attacking qualities, particularly her ability to score in different ways.
“Clara adds an exciting new dimension to our attack as we head toward the playoffs. Despite her young age, she has demonstrated the ability to score goals in different ways and has the profile to be very successful in this league,” Sporting Director James Hocken stated.
Luvanga is joining Washington during the 2026 season as the club competes for a place in the playoffs.
