Kenyans have reacted to a CCTV footage showing a man assaulting a police officer after what appeared to be a heated argument at a petrol station.

The footage seen by The Kenya Times begins with the two engaging in a verbal exchange that quickly escalates into a violent altercation.

The video shows the man, dressed in a blue shirt and black trousers, refuelling a vehicle.

A uniformed police officer, holding a rifle, was standing nearby, arguing with the man as a bystander tried to calm the situation.

The petrol station attendant then pointed a finger at the officer at close range.

This prompted the officer to react by grabbing the man’s arm and throwing a punch to spark a furious reaction from the attendant, who stopped fueling the car and unleashed a series of heavy blows on the officer.

The officer’s cap flew off, and his rifle fell as he struggled to fend off the attack. But the man continued to beat up the officer, and eventually, the policeman collapsed to the ground.

However, a group of police officers then rushed to the scene, pulling the man away from their colleague, who was still on the ground. A black Land Rover Defender arrives, and the attacker is bundled inside before the vehicle sped off.

Robert Alai Reaction

Kileleshwa Ward Representative Robert Alai, who shared the video on his X account, urged Kenyans not to fight the police officer, describing the act as “inviting your death”.

“Don’t ever fight a police officer in uniform. You are inviting your death. This young man will have the longest day and night of his life,” he said.

Wahome Thuku Reaction

Wahome Thuku, a lawyer, also shared the video on his Facebook account, stating that the officer should be charged with assault.

“I have heard people claim that you should never fight cops. No, you should defend yourself lawfully. There are constitutional ways of effecting an arrest. The officer was not arresting him; he was fighting him. If you play this clip in court, you lose your case. Without the clip, they will say he tried to disarm the officer.”

“The cop was slapped and dropped his gun? What if there was no backup? Take him to the anti-stock theft unit in Gilgil,” he added.

Cases of Civilians Beating Police Has Escalated

This comes as Kenya has witnessed a growing number of incidents where civilians, particularly men, have assaulted police officers.

These cases, ranging from viral videos to courtroom battles, reflect rising tensions between the public and law enforcement. While some assailants faced legal consequences, including long prison sentences, others had their convictions overturned on appeal.

The surge in such cases has sparked national conversations about respect for law, police conduct, and the broader state of public trust in the justice system.
