How Top National Schools Performed in 2024 KCSE

Of the total number of 1,693 candidates who achieved an overall grade of A in the exams, 1,375 came from national schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on January 9, 2025, released the official results of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 examinations. Of the total number of 1,693 candidates, or 0.18%, who achieved an overall grade of A in the KCSE 2024 exams, 1,375 came from national schools compared to 1,216 candidates, or 0.14%, in 2023. 

Other 163 candidates came from extra-county schools, 4 from county schools, 9 from sub-county schools, and 142 from private schools.

Alliance and Kenya High emerged among the country’s top national schools in the 2024 KCSE.

Alliance High registered a mean score of 10.31 made up of 100 As, 134 A-, and 107 B+ out of 452 students.

On its part, Kenya High registered 70 As, 114 A-, 93 B+ and a mean score of 10.131 making it among the top schools based on computations done by various schools.

How National Schools Performed in KCSE 2024

Alliance Girls High School bounced back to the top charts after registering 89 A’s and a mean score of 10.038.

In addition, Maryhill Girls registered 80 A’s while Mang’u High School had 107 A’s.

Other schools with a high number of A’s include Kapsabet Boys (65), Meru School (52), Friends School Kamusinga and Starehe Boys (both 47), Kagumo High School (41), and Maseno High School (35).

In Nairobi County, Starehe Boys Centre recorded a mean score of 10.1116 while Moi Forces Academy recorded a mean score of 9.071.

For Central region national schools, Mang’u High School emerged among the top posting a mean score of 10.01 while Maryhill Girls recorded a 10.051 mean score.

Murang’a High School registered 50 As 108 A- 110 B+, and a mean score of 9.720.

Kagumo High School in Nyeri achieved a mean score of 9.543 made up of 41 A plain grades, 100 A-, 116 B+. Chogoria Girls attained an 8.9320 mean score.

Meru School recorded a 9.366 mean score while Baricho Boys High School in Kirinyaga County recorded 30 As, 110 A-, 108 B+, and a mean score of 9.4.

Rift Valley giants Kapsabet High School and Moi High School- Kabarak also emerged on the charts of top schools with mean scores of 10.1457 and 9.89 respectively.

Utumishi Boys Academy in Gilgil attained a 9.15 mean score.

Performance in Nyanza region

In Nyanza, the regions giant schools Maseno School and Maranda High is back among the list of top performers. With a mean grade of 9.7286, Maseno School registered 36 As, 161A-, and 226 B+.

Maranda school on its part registered a mean score of 9.6975 up from 9.578 in the 2023 KCSE. Agoro Sare recorded impressive results compared to national schools in the region with a mean score of 9.175.

The school had 56 As in the exam, making it among the few with over 50 As countrywide.

Elsewhere in Kisii County,  Nyambaria High School registered a sterling performance which saw 95% of all registered candidates meet the minimum entry grade for university education.

The school registered a mean grade of 9.1058 made up of 2 As, 49A-, and 225 B+.

Kisii School on its part recorded a mean grade of 8.581. Little known Nyakongo Boys defeated both Nyambaria and Kisii School, recording a mean score of 9.215.

In Western Kenya, Friends School Kamusinga recorded 47 As, 111A-, and 116 B+ with a mean score of 9.886.

KCSE 2024 statistics

A total number of 965,512 candidates registered for the KCSE 2024 exams, marking a 7.19% increase compared to previous years.

Among the candidates, 246,391 students attained direct university entry qualifications with a Grade C+ and above, translating to 25.3%.  

In the B+ category, National schools led with 6,947 candidates securing the grade, followed closely by extra county schools with 7,667 students achieving B+.

County schools had 1,102 students, while sub-county schools and private schools recorded 1,901, 1,533 candidates at the same grade level respectively.

National schools had 8,185 students achieving B plain grades, while extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates.

County schools followed with 31,712 students securing B plain grades, and sub-county schools reported 38,309 achievers. Private schools had 6,362 students attaining this grade.

For B-, national schools had 7,672 students, extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates, and county schools had 36,678 students securing B-.

Sub-county schools reported 29,736 students, while private schools had 10,723 students achieving the grade.
