Anxiety as KNEC Withholds KCSE 2024 Results for Top National School

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has withheld the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 results of Lugulu Girls High School candidates in Bungoma County.

This comes after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on January 9, 2025, released the official results of the KCSE 2024 examinations.

Lugulu Girls School’s management has appealed to candidates who sat the examinations and their parents to be patient as the school pursues its results through the official appeal channels with the council.

“Dear Parent/Guardian, we are aware that your child has not yet received their examination results. Please rest assured that the matter is being addressed, and the results will be made available to you in due time. Further communication will follow,” read a letter signed by the school principal Dinah Cheruiyot addressed to parents and guardians of the school.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa, on his part, assured the students and their parents that the results have not been cancelled, asking them to remain patient.

He made the statement while noting that celebrations for the results “can only be delayed for a few days and not forever”.

“I pen down this statement to the students and parents of Lugulu Girls High School, whose exams have been withheld by the Kenya National Examinations Council. We share the same concerns. It will be well. I have been assured that the exams were not cancelled but withheld—just a matter of procedure and verification through a process akin to VAR in football,” said the MP.

While confirming that the results for the national school were withheld, Western Region Director of Education Jared Obiero said that they will be out soon.

Obiero explained that the withholding of the results means that they are being reviewed and have not yet been approved or rejected.

“The results were pended, and we are sorting out the matter. Let there be no cause of alarm. The results will be out soon,” said Obiero.

He added, “This usually happens for a number of reasons, including missing information or errors. We call for patience as we pursue this case.”

Cancellation of results

The anxiety at Lugulu Girls about the examinations comes after KNEC cancelled examination results for 840 candidates who took the KCSE examination for engaging in exam irregularities.

CS Ogamba noted that the examinations council withheld the results of 2,829 candidates over suspicion of engaging in exam irregularities, pending the conclusion of an investigation process in 30 days.

He confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against 91 teachers who were reported to have aided in examination malpractices.

Lugulu Girls school is among national schools located in the Western region which have in the past years recorded impressive results in KCSE examinations.

The institution, celebrated for its strong performance, had achieved an impressive mean grade of 9.328 in the 2023 KCSE, with one A plain, 63 A-, and numerous other quality grades.

Of the total number of 1,693 candidates who achieved an overall grade of A in the KCSE 2024 exams, 1,375 came from national schools compared to 1,216 candidates, or 0.14%, in 2023.
