The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced several job openings across its departments, as the company looks to position the Port of Mombasa as a gateway to East and Central Africa.
In a notice on November 25, KPA announced that it seeks to recruit highly motivated and result-oriented individuals to fill the exciting and challenging positions, which range from engineering, ferry services, medical services, and administrative roles.
Vacant Positions
Artisan
KPA has advertised, among other vacant positions, the post of an artisan, which falls under KPA’s Engineering Services and Infrastructure Development under pensionable terms.
In the notice, KPA stated that the basic salary for these positions ranges from Ksh67,317 to Ksh85,554, with a Ksh26,675 house allowance and a Ksh14,000 transport allowance.
The individuals will be required to work in any role within the department, including mechanical (plumbing, fitting, welding, and fabrication), electrical, painting, carpentry and joinery/aluminium, and masonry.
The entry grade for all artisans is KPA9, and they will be deployed to work under the guidance of senior artisans to:
- Conduct daily safety checks on equipment
- Assist in planned and emergency maintenance
- Record equipment maintenance and production data
- Support welding, fabrication, and component production
- Maintain housekeeping standards and proper handling of tools and materials
Applicants for the positions must hold KCSE certificates or their equivalent, possess a Government Trade Test III qualification or its equivalent from a recognized institution, demonstrate proficiency in computer applications, comply with Chapter Six of the Constitution, and be aged 30 years or below.
Technician
KPA has also announced that it is recruiting technicians to strengthen its engineering and infrastructure operations, also under pensionable terms.
Technicians in this entry grade (KPA8) will be deployed across various functional areas, including mechanical, electrical, civil, projects, instrumentation and control, and shift operations.
Their responsibilities will include assisting senior technicians with implementing maintenance programs, performing emergency repairs, inspecting installations, preparing specifications for materials, and supporting project data collection and reporting.
Technicians will work closely with senior engineers to implement maintenance programs, assist with emergency repairs, and ensure the smooth operation of marine craft, electrical installations, and civil works.
The basic salary for these positions ranges from Ksh76,156 to Ksh108,767, complemented by a house allowance of Ksh32,750 and a transport allowance of Ksh17,000.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, hold a diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Permanent Way, Building and Construction, Electrical, Electronics, or Marine Engineering from a recognized institution, demonstrate proficiency in computer applications, and comply with the integrity requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Assistant Ferry Master
KPA has announced vacancies for the position of Assistant Ferry Master in the Ferry Services department, offering on pensionable terms.
The entry grade for this role is KPA7, and offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh100,660 to Ksh132,290, plus a house allowance of Ksh42,000 and a transport allowance of Ksh25,000.
The successful candidates will have overall command of the vessel and responsibility for the safety of crew, passengers, and cargo during carriage and while the vessel is underway, anchored, or secured at the ramp.
Key duties include observing navigation safety, responding to maritime distress calls, conducting pre-sea checks to ensure vessel soundness, steering during berthing and unberthing, updating the ship’s logbook, maintaining radio watch, and issuing safety instructions to ferry users.
The Assistant Ferry Master will also lead emergency drills, oversee bunkering operations, and coordinate ferry movements to maintain smooth traffic flow.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, a diploma in Nautical Studies or a related field from a recognized institution, and at least four years of relevant experience.
Additional requirements include a Master Port Operation Certificate of Competency, STCW certification, a valid medical certificate as prescribed by the Kenya Maritime Authority, and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Coxswain II
Further, KPA has announced the vacancy for the position of Coxswain II, a role offered on pensionable terms, with successful candidates being responsible for operating harbour pilot and mooring boats.
Duties include steering pilot boats, supervising bunkering operations, and executing maintenance plans in liaison with the marine engineering team. Coxswains will also coordinate mooring operations to guarantee safe berthing and unberthing of vessels.
The position offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh76,156 to Ksh108,767, plus a house allowance of Ksh32,750 and a transport allowance of Ksh17,000.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, at least three years of experience as a Sailor I or in a similar role, and hold mandatory STCW 95 certificates, including a Coxswain certificate.
The entry grade is KPA8, and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution is also required.
Pharmacy Attendant
KPA is inviting applications for the position of Pharmacy Attendant under the Medical Services department.
The successful candidate will assist in providing quality pharmaceutical care, including dispensing medicines, organizing pharmacy shelves, pre-packing drugs, maintaining cleanliness in the dispensing area, supporting stock management and ensuring proper handling of medicines.
The role offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh67,317 to Ksh85,554, plus a house allowance of Ksh26,675 and a transport allowance of Ksh14,000.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, a certificate in pharmacy from a recognized institution (an added advantage), ICT skills, and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Laboratory Technologist
KPA has announced vacancies for Laboratory Technologists under the Medical Services department, with the entry grade being KPA7.
The position offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh100,660 to Ksh132,290, plus a house allowance of Ksh42,000 and a transport allowance of Ksh25,000.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, a diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution, be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board, have ICT skills, and comply with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Pharmaceutical Technologist
Kenya Ports Authority is also seeking Pharmaceutical Technologists to join its Medical Services team. The role involves dispensing medicines, counseling patients on medication use, compounding drugs, monitoring cold chain items, and participating in pharmacovigilance and stocktaking.
The position offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh100,660 to Ksh132,290, plus a house allowance of Ksh42,000 and a transport allowance of Ksh25,000. The entry grade for this role is KPA7.
Applicants must have a KCSE certificate or its equivalent, a diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution, registration with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, a valid practicing license, ICT skills, and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
Graduate Trainee
KPA is inviting applications for the position of Graduate Trainees under pensionable terms, with the entry grade being KPA8.
Successful candidates will undergo structured training across various departments, including engineering, finance, ICT, and administration, to develop technical and managerial competencies.
The position offers a basic salary ranging from Ksh76,156 to Ksh108,767, plus a house allowance of Ksh32,750 and a transport allowance of Ksh17,000.
Applicants must be under 30 years of age and hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, finance, engineering, ICT, or any other relevant field from a recognized university.
