The Judiciary has announced the passing of Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, a Judge of the Court of Appeal.
Chief Justice Martha Koome, in a statement on Wednesday, September 17, on behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), said that he will be remembered for his sharp legal mind and unwavering commitment to justice.
Further, Koome described Justice Ochieng as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and a strong advocate for alternative dispute resolution.

At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

The Career of Justice Ochieng
He began his judicial career in 2003 when he was appointed Judge of the High Court.
He has served for over 20 years with distinction in various stations and divisions, including Kitale, Kakamega, Kisumu, the Civil and Criminal Divisions, and the Commercial and Admiralty Division.
According to the JSC, his judgments earned him respect among colleagues and lawyers alike for their depth, clarity, and fairness.
In 2022, he was promoted to serve at the Court of Appeal.
At the time of his passing, he was serving as Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, spearheading a national roll-out of mediation in courts.
The initiative aims to ease case backlogs and improve access to justice by encouraging faster, less adversarial dispute resolution.
“We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning,” added Koome.

Life Before Court
Before joining the Judiciary, Justice Ochieng had a distinguished legal career at Kaplan & Stratton Advocates, one of Kenya’s leading law firms, where he practiced for close to two decades.
