At least eleven students from Kenyatta University died on the spot after the bus they were travelling in was involved in a grisly road accident along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.Â
The crash happened at Taita village near Maungu in Taita Taveta on Monday, March 18, when a Kenyatta University bus ferrying students collided with a trailer.Â
Preliminary reports indicated that 42 other students are admitted in various hospitals, with different degrees of injuries.Â
At the same time, 4 students cannot be accounted for.Â
The students were heading to the coastal city of Mombasa for an academic trip when the unfortunate incident happened.
On the other hand, the trailer was headed to Nairobi. Messages of condolence poured in as the news spread fast and furious. Commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama was among Kenyans who reacted to the accident.
“My heartfelt condolence to the families, relatives and friends of the Kenyatta University students who have perished in a grisly accident at Maungu, Voi, Taita Taveta County,” said Commissioner Muthama.Â

Bomet Accident
Elsewhere in Bomet, five people died while 18 others sustained injuries after a shuttle collided with a tractor.
The Monday, March 18 accident happened along Bomet – Kiptagic road.Â
Police said those who were injured were rushed to Tenwek Hospital for treatment.
Bomet Central Police boss Musa Imamai stated that the accident occurred due to lane indiscipline.

“It happened that the driver was driving his motor vehicle from Olenguruone heading towards Bomet general direction. On reaching at location of the accident, the driver of the matatu failed to keep to his proper lane and rammed on the tractor.
Vehicle and tractor to be towed to Bomet police station for further police action,” the police report read in part.Â
