The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed the cause of the fatal accident involving a Mombasa bound Tahmeed bus and a tanker along the Busia-Kisumu Highway.
The transport authority in a joint statement with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on March 1, 2024, noted that lane indiscipline led to the fatal crash.
“Preliminary reports indicate lane indiscipline and dangerous overtaking by the tanker driver as the probable causes of the crash, ” Read part of the statement.
NTSA also noted that ten people were involved in the crash, with two unfortunately succumbing to their injuries.
Eight other passengers are currently receiving treatment at the Busia County Referral Hospital, according to NTSA.
On its part, EPRA indicated that the prime mover of the tanker suffered extensive damage.

However, the trailer and the bulk tank remained intact with no leakage of the bulk diesel being transported.
The two authorities further added that the scene of the crash has been since been secured.
“Further investigations are ongoing with a multi- agency team. We condole with the families of the bereaved and wish quick recovery to those undergoing treatment,” the statement added.
Tahmeed statement
On its part, Tahmeed Coach Limited issued a statement on the fatal accident involving its Mombasa-bound bus.

In an update, the bus company pledged to cooperate with authorities as they conduct investigations.
Furthermore, it reiterated its commitment to ensuring that it adheres to all road safety regulations.

The company extended its wishes to the affected families for a quick recovery and assured future passengers that measures have been put in place to ensure they get to their destination in good time.
“Earlier today afternoon 1st March 1, 2024, our bus KCV 296R from Busia to Mombasa via Mumias was involved in an accident at 1320 hours close to Mundika Primary, onboard were 6 passengers and a crew member all of whom were successfully evacuated and taken to the nearest hospital for treatment,” the company stated.
What’s more, the fatal accident is among a number of road crashes that have been recorded in the year 2024.
Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah was on February 16 morning involved in a grisly road accident along the same highway.
According to Omtatah, the accident happened at the Ojola area in Kisumu County as he was travelling to Busia.
The accident occurred when a trailer lost control and hit his vehicle from behind causing it to veer off from the road.
Meanwhile, statistics released by NTSA in a February 14 report indicated that a total of 563 Kenyans have lost their lives in road accidents from January 1 to February 11, 2024.
