DCI Clarifies Reports of Forming Anti-Abduction Squad

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has clarified reports that it is forming an anti-abduction unit.

In a statement on Thursday, January 23, DCI said the reports are fake.

DCI flagged on one of the posters inviting police officers to apply for the positions as “fake”.

The fake poster falsely claimed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had proposed the formation of an anti-abduction unit.

It stated that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had agreed with the proposal to have 30 officers from both the Kenya Police and Administration Police Service interviewed and selected for the unit.

The poster also listed qualifications required for the officers and instructed that all applications be submitted by January 26, 2025.

KNCHR Abduction Statistics

Since the Gen Z protests erupted in June 2024, the country has seen a rise in cases of abductions and enforced disappearances.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported on December 26, 2024, that 82 abduction cases had been documented since June 2024.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka have been vocal in criticizing the government over the issue of abductions.

Kalonzo Alleges Abduction Squad Offices

Speaking on January 15, Kalonzo claimed that the government has established control structures outside the constitution carrying out illegal activities against Kenyans.

Kalonzo alleged that the unit properly structured with the head offices in Ruaraka, Nairobi.

“We have since established that the headquarters of this abduction squad are somewhere near Ruaraka,” Kalonzo alleged.

Kalonzo defended National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji arguing that President William Ruto should be held responsible for the abductions.

He claimed that Ruto was the one leading the abduction unit and should take the blame.

“Ruto is the Commander in Chief of the abduction squad this has been clearly demonstrated by his own public pronouncements on the abductions as well as those of his conceited cronies in government. Kenyans and the international community should read between the lines,” Kalonzo alleged.

Gachagua Alleges Identity of Abduction Unit Boss

Gachagua has made similar accusations, alleging the existence of a secret unit behind the recent abductions.

He claimed the unit operates independently of the Inspector General of Police, with its base on the 21st floor of a building in Nairobi’s city center.

The unit is supposedly led by a man named “Abel,” whom Gachagua says is a cousin of a senior government official.

“There is a unit that is not under the command of the IG of Police. There’s a building in Nairobi on the 21st floor at the city center, where the unit is operating from, led by a certain Mr. Abel. Abel is a cousin to a very senior official in this government,” Gachagua stated.

He vowed to reveal the name of the abduction unit and Abel’s identity if the government fails to disband it.
