Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu has announced the death of Faustine Ndugulile, a former minister who was serving as the Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region.
In a statement Suluhu said that she learnt about the passing of Ndugulile on the night of November 27, 2024.
“I have received with great sorrow the news of the passing of Honorable Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, Member of Parliament for Kigamboni and the designated Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, which occurred on the night of November 27, 2024.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honorable Dr. Tulia Ackson, Members of Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, the people of Kigamboni, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, also sent his message of condolences.
“Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, Regional Director-elect. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and to the parliament and people of Tanzania,” read his statement.

Kenya, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, also sent its message of condolences, saying:

“We were looking forward to the leadership of Dr. Faustine, whose election to the helm of WHO Africa was concluded a few months ago. We are deeply grieved by his sudden passing and convey our sympathies to his family, the friendly people of Tanzania, and Africa at large. Mungu awasitiri.”
Previous positions held by Faustine
Ndugulile’s death was also announced by the Speaker of the Tanzania’s National Assembly.
He died while he was seeking treatment in India although the cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Ndugulile was set to assume his role as WHO’s Regional Director for Africa in February 2025, following the submission of his name for appointment during the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board.

Before his demise, Ndugulile served as a Member of Parliament for Kigamboni in Tanzania and was also a medical doctor specializing in Public Health and Medical Microbiology.
He also served as Tanzania’s Minister of Communication and Information Technology at one point.
Ndugulile additionally held the position of Health Minister in the country.
He was also a member of the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society, based in Geneva.
