Julius Irungu, the father of murder convict Joseph Irungu alias Jowie Irungu has been confirmed dead.
Irungu passed away on Saturday 15 2024 at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital Annex.
Irungu’s widow Annastacia Thaama confirmed the devastating news and expressed her grief at the loss of her husband.
She said Julius Irungu succumbed to cancer at the age 0f 64. However, the widow did not reveal the specific type of cancer.
“We lost him yesterday and we are still coming to terms with his death. We were taking him to Nairobi for treatment but when his condition suddenly deteriorated, we had to rush him to Nakuru Level Five Annex Hospital for treatment before we could transfer him to Nairobi and sadly, he died at the facility,” said Ms Thaama.

Jowie Irungu’s Father Julius Mwangi Irungu Dies
According to the family, the Late mzee has been battling cancer, but his illness accelerated after his son faced murder charges and was convicted.
The widow said her husband has been in and out of hospital due to the disease until his demise on Saturday.
Irungu is survived by his wife Annastacia and their four children.
His death brings more grief to the Irungu family, who have already faced the high-profile legal troubles of Jowie, convicted of murdering businesswoman Monica Kimani in 2018.
Jowie was sentenced by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka to death for the murder on March 13, 2024.
Family members are requesting that Jowie be allowed to bury his father, even if under police protection.

Irungu, his wife, and daughter attended most of Jowie’s court hearings in the murder case where he was charged and convicted.
This comes months after Jowie an appeal challenging a High Court ruling that sentenced him to death for the murder of Monica Kimani.
The petition filed against the Attorney General, the convict demanded that Section 379(4) of the Criminal Procedure Code be declared discriminatory.
Joseph Irungu’s Appeal for Death Sentence Denied
“A declaration that Section 379(4) of the Criminal Procedure Code is unconstitutional, null and void to the extent that it denies persons sentenced to death the right to bail pending appeal,” read the documents in parts.

“A declaration that the Petitioner’s sentencing to death on 13th March 2024 was in contravention of the Petitioner’s non-derogable right to freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment contrary to Article 25 of the Constitution.”
However, on June 8 Attorney General (AG)Justin Muturi called on the High Court to dismiss a petition by Joseph Irungu.
The AG countered, asserting that the death penalty, including Irungu’s sentence, is both legal and lawful.
AG Muturi also argued that the High Court lacks the jurisdiction to review the conviction and sentencing in Jowie’s case, Nairobi High Court Criminal Case No. 51 of 2018, Republic vs Irungu Jowie and another.
