Fresh details concerning a National Police Service (NPS) officer who shot a magistrate at the Makadara Law Courts before being killed by other security officers have emerged.
The officer drew his gun on June 13, 2024, and shot Madaraka Law Courts Principal Magistrate Monicah Kivuti during a live court session.

The Judiciary of Kenya in a statement confirmed the shooting incident and explained that the magistrate had cancelled the bond of the suspect’s wife before the fatal shooting
“We are saddened to report an unfortunate shooting incident involving a police officer and a Magistrate at the Makadara Law Courts on 13th June 2024.

During an open court session earlier today, the Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond,” read part of the statement.
According to the Judiciary, immediately this decision was pronounced, the officer shot at the Magistrate and injured her on the hip.

Makadara Law Courts Shooting
Judiciary further revealed that Police Officers in the scene responded and neutralized the shooter, adding that the Magistrate has since been rushed to hospital for treatment.

Preliminary reports indicate that the shooter is a Police Officer who is married to the suspect.
At the same time the Judiciary sent message of condolences to the family of the officer involved in the shooting while also wishing quick recovery to the injured Magistrate.
“As the Judiciary family, we wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident,” said the Judiciary.

The Judiciary has urged for calm from all court users, noting that law enforcement agencies are currently conducting expansive investigations into the incident.
Judiciary on Safety in Courts
Also, all Judicial Officers, Staff and Court Users have been assured of their safety and security by the third arm of the government in all its premises.
“We will enhance our security protocols for civilians visiting our courts as well as security officers who visit courts in circumstances that do not require them to be armed,” said the Judiciary.
