A police officer died following a shooting incident described as a brutal attack from a colleague in Mbooni, Makueni County.
According to a report, the suspect surrendered himself to his boss after shooting and killing his colleague.
Mbooni West Sub County police commander Charles Ronoh in a statement on March 30, 2024, confirmed there was a shooting incident within the Mbooni West police camp.
“At around 6:15 to 6:30 some officers from the Administration Police Service were reporting on duty. I do not know whether they disagreed because we just heard a loud bang,” Ronoh explained.
Residents of the Kikima area woke up to gunshots following the altercation between the two officers. It is reported that the two had recently been transferred to the station located in Mbooni West sub county.

The police boss in a statement noted that the incident left the other officers in shock as the two colleagues had no prior quarrels.

The deceased, APC Hassan Ahmed was reportedly killed by the accused, APC Anthony Mariapei using his G3 rifle.
According to the station’s commander, the officers were returning their firearms after an overnight shift when the victim was shot and bled to death.
“On trying to talk to him, it was realized that the officer was bleeding on the left side of the ribs.
On further examination, it was discovered that he had been shot by use of a firearm and he was dead,” read part of an OB report.
The root cause of the shooting is yet to be established. The murder suspect has since been put under custody as investigations were launched to ascertain the events leading to the incident.

Additionally, both the officers’ G3 rifles issued to both the deceased and the accused officers have been detained.
The rifles loaded with 20 and 18 rounds have been detained as exhibits pending ballistic examinations.
The deceased’s body on the other hand was transferred to Mbooni sub-County Hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
Suicidal shooting
Meanwhile, this was the second incident involving death of an officer recorded during the Easter period after another officer was left dead at an earlier shooting incident.
The deceased, identified as Constable Andrew Miranyi Gati, stationed at Magutu Police Post in Laikipia County reportedly died by taking his own life.
According to a police report, the officer was found dead in his residence having apparently shot himself with a G3 Rifle.
The firearm was recovered from the scene by responding officers from Umande Police Station along with 19 rounds of ammunition.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since initiated investigations into the shooting as the motive behind Constable Gati’s actions remains unclear.
