Google has announced the opening of applications for the 8th cohort of its prestigious Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program.
This year’s edition will have a strong focus on startups leveraging cutting edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to tackle critical challenges and unlock new opportunities across the continent.
The program is a three-month, equity-free virtual program that provides African startups with invaluable mentorship, technical resources, and access to a global network of experts and investors.
Eligible startups must be based in Africa or developing Africa-centric solutions and should be utilizing AI/ML in a transformative way.
“We’re excited to support the next generation of African AI pioneers through the Google for Startups Accelerator, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to build successful, impactful businesses,” said Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startups Ecosystem, Africa at Google.

“Africa’s tech ecosystem is a hotbed of innovation, and AI has the potential to be a transformative force across various sectors.” he added.
Benefits of Selected Startups for the Google Program
Startups selected for this cohort will receive equity-free support of up to $350,000 (Ksh 47,250,000) in Google Cloud credits, personalized guidance from Google AI experts and industry leaders, and in-depth training on AI/ML development and scaling.
Additionally, the startups will have the opportunity to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers, as well as join a supportive network of fellow founders facing similar challenges and opportunities.
“In Africa, digital transformation is accelerating rapidly, and startups play a vital role in shaping the continent’s future,” Google noted in a statement.
“From fintech and agritech to healthcare and education, these innovative ventures are driving economic growth, creating jobs, and solving some of society’s most pressing challenges.”
Deadline for submissions
The deadline for submissions is May 20, 2024, and the program will kick off on June 24, 2024.

Since it was founded in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program has already made a significant impact, supporting 106 startups from 17 African countries.

The 8th cohort of the program, which will run from June to September 2024, promises to be even more transformative.
