Afrobeat sensation David Adedeji Adeleke famously known as Davido has revealed why he chose to take action against Kenyan media television station K24 for spreading false information about his alleged arrest on drug charges as part of an April Fools’ prank.
In an interview with US based Radio Show, Sway’s Universe, Davido candidly revealed that he had initially chosen to ignore the prank citing it as just a harmless April fool’s joke.
He later changed his mind and decided to take legal action due to the potential harm to his international travel and reputation.
Davido disclosed that his father Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, was the one who advised him to take legal action against the defamatory article noting that if he didn’t anywhere, he travels to he would be stopped on suspicion of drug possession.
“And at first, I was like nah I’m not going to report it, just let it go its April Fools and my dad was like no because you can fly to any country now and then they bring 20 police to check you,” said Davido.

Additionally, Davido expressed appreciation to his Kenyan fans noting that he had an amazing time during the electrifying “Raha Fest” event in Nairobi on March 30, 2024.

“Shout out to the people of Kenya. It was just one crazy person who decided to do an April Fool’s joke, but the country…we just came from East Africa…we just did Uganda and Kenya…amazing…both shows…everything went well,” he said.
Details of the defamatory article
On April 1, 2024, K24 TV published a false article claiming that Nigerian Afro beats singer Davido had been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The article claimed that cocaine was discovered on Davido’s private jet. The reports circulated after he finished his performance at “Raha Festival” in Kenya.

Following this Davido’s legal team demanded the removal of defamatory content, a cease and desist from defamation, a public apology, admission of liability, compensation for legal fees, and the issuance of a statement clarifying that Davido was not arrested.
