Kenya Met Issues Next Week’s Forecast; Warns of Thunderstorms in Nairobi

In its latest weekly weather forecast, the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has warned of afternoon thunderstorms in Nairobi between May 4, to May 8.

According to the weatherman, rainfall is expected to continue in different parts of the country while strong winds are expected in the coastal area. 

Further, the report details that those areas within the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County, will experience rain through the morning hours.

Additionally, areas within the region will experience showers over several places during the night. 

Other areas within the region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi Counties.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country. Heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, North-western and North-eastern Kenya.

“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds with speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are expected over the Coast and some parts of North-eastern Kenya,” the weatherman noted.

Kenya Met Forecast of Other Regions

At the same time, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are also predicted to experience thunderstorms and showers in the afternoon through next week.

Also, the region will experience temperatures between a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius and lows of 12 degrees Celsius. 

The areas within the region include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot Counties.

On the other hand, the Northwest Region including Turkana and Samburu Counties and the North-eastern region including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties will experience showers and thunderstorms over several places through the week.

The same forecast applies to the Southeastern lowlands which include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties, except for May 7 and May 8 when Sunny mornings are expected. 

Additionally, the weatherman noted that the coastal region including Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties will experience showers over several places throughout the day between May 5 and May 8. 

“Heavy rainfall along the coastal strip is expected from Sunday, May 5th, intensifying on Monday, May 6th, to Tuesday, May 7th, 2024,” added the weather man.

Effects of Cyclone Hidaya

In a statement on Saturday, May 4, the weatherman indicated that, the cyclone is expected to make landfall with fierce winds exceeding 40 knots

Residents along the coast were advised to brace themselves for the cyclone’s impact as the cyclone is expected to make landfall with fierce winds exceeding 40 knots

“The coastal area is expected to experience the effects of Cyclone Hidaya, with powerful winds surpassing 40 knots and significant ocean waves over 2 meters high,” said the Kenya Met.

This alert comes in the wake of recent devastating floods and heavy rains in East Africa, which have resulted in a tragic loss of lives and the displacement of thousands of individuals.
