Drama in Court as Senior Police Officer Shoots Magistrate

A police officer shot and injured a female Principal Magistrate at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.

The Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti was shot in the court soon after she had delivered a ruling in a case involving the wife of the senior officer on June 13.

She was however rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries on the chest and her left hip.

The Police identified as Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Londiani Police Station was shortly shot dead by his fellow officers.

“After the magistrate made a ruling on the case, the officer went behind the tent and shot her,” Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei said.

“Other officers present responded by shooting the officer, fatally injuring him.”

Police Officer Shoots Magistrate

The 55-year-old had travelled to Nairobi to attend to a case where his wife Jenifer Wairimu 48 was accused of obtaining money by false pretense amounting to Ksh.2.9 million.

His wife had pleaded to be released on cash bail pending a hearing and determination of the case, but the court did not grant and wanted.

The court was sitting in a tent outside the main courtrooms due to lack of space.

“In the process three officers were injured, 1.  No. 118817 PC Augustine Michael Kithumbi who was injured on the left eye, 2. No. 232032 PC (w) Maureen Lepes sustained a gun shot in the left leg and 3. 240750 PC Eunice Macharia who sustained an injury on the left hand,” read part of police report.

However, all the injured officers were rushed to hospital in stable condition and a Jericho pistol was recovered at the scene, processed by CSI team from Buruburu.

The deceased’s body was moved to City Mortuary awaiting an autopsy and preservation.

Images shared online showed that part of the courtroom was covered in blood.

Judiciary Responds to the Shootings

Judiciary in a statement said the Magistrate cancelled the bond for the accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping it.

“Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the Magistrate and injured her on the hip,” Judiciary said.

They urged for calm from all court users as the law enforcement agencies further investigate the incident.

The Judiciary further assured all Judicial Officers, Staff and Court Users of their safety and security in all their premises

“We will enhance our security protocols for civilians visiting our courts as well as security officers who visit courts in circumstances that do not require them to be armed,” the statement read.
