President William Ruto has issued directives to the employees of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) after the rollout of Social Health Assurance (SHA).
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations, Ruto said the employees will be managed under the new Act.
“I’m aware that during this transition period, the employees of the former NHIF will be managed in accordance with the SHA Act of 2023,” he said.
Ruto pledged that all the NHIF employees will be absorbed under SHA, and none will be fired.
“I want to assure all the former employees and those now serving under our new outfit that no one will lose their jobs,” Ruto said.
Additionally, President Ruto appreciated the employee’s dedication and service during the transition from NHIF to SHA.
“We will make sure that everybody who has served in the former outfit, is transitioned into the current outfit,” Ruto said.
He stated that the government has implemented strong institutional and strategic measures to extend the impact of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
This includes developing the biomedical, pharmaceutical and medical supplies production industries.
Ruto explained that the government is improving the overall supply chain, starting with capacity upgrades to enhance health care delivery and ensure the security of medical supplies.
Further, he mentioned that the government has established of Kenya Medical Supplies Regional Distribution Centres in Kisumu, Embakasi and Mombasa.

He stated that the government has transformed the provision of healthcare to enable all Kenyans to access promotive and preventive services in addition to curative services,
This he said has been under an all-inclusive social health framework and also through programmes like Afya Bora Mashinani, which has on-boarded over 100,000 community health promoters, who provide care directly to people in their homes.

He maintained that healthcare remains a priority under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Ruto said the government is advancing the scope of the Universal Health Coverage to give every Kenyan access to promotive, preventive, curative and emergency services through the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) which will contribute and access comprehensive healthcare benefits.
“The value for money in this scheme will be undeniable once the migration from the National Health Insurance Fund is completed and the fund is fully operational,” Ruto said.
“As of the beginning of this month, 12.9 million Kenyans were registered with the SHA, and all public health institutions, along with 50% of private facilities, were already enrolled to provide services.”
Additionally, he urged private hospitals to expedite the contracting process to enable the government to complete the final phase of the Universal Health Coverage rollout.
He added that the government released Ksh3 billion to settle outstanding payments to service providers to accelerate the rollout.
