Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declined to support the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua through a special committee.
Sifuna was called upon during a Senate sitting to second the motion by Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot.
The Majority leader called for the establishment of an 11-member select committee to investigate the removal of the deputy president.
“Much that this is happening, it is the first time. There is a proposal before us as per our standing orders to either consider this matter by a special committee or the plenary. “
“The proposal is that we select 11 of our most trusted members from both sides of the house to consider this impeachment and advise us. They can make a decision on the 11 charges and determine if there are any actionable accusations,” said Cheruiyot.

Sifuna Refuses to Second the Motion
However, Sifuna stated that the case was unique therefore necessitating a plenary session.
Consequently, Gachagua will now have to face the full Senate plenary.
“This is a matter that is very unique that has elicited public attention. Therefore, given the mood of the house especially on the minority side, I respectfully decline to second that motion,” he stated.
“The motion has been withdrawn, and the proposal for a special committee is defeated. The senate will therefore proceed with the investigations of the removal of office of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in plenary.”

What Next for Gachagua in the Senate
Therefore, Senate Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi declared the proposal withdrawn ordering that Gachagua be issued with an invitation to appear before the Senate.
The invitation will be issued to the deputy president within the day by the clerk of the assembly.
“I hereby give the following directions, the clear to issue an invitation to appear to the deputy president today, Wednesday, October 9, 2024,” Amason Jeffah Kingi stated.
Additionally, the speaker directed that the Senate proceed with the plenary investigations on Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17.
“The parties are to file their responses with the clerk of the senate by 5:00 pm, Monday, October 14, 2024. The Senate shall then investigate the matter in plenary on Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17,” Kingi added.
