The Supreme Court of Kenya has received an Award of Judicial Excellence from the African Bar Association.
In a statement on September 4, the Judiciary said the apex has been awarded for exceptional handling of the Presidential election petitions between President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Supreme Court accepted the award, and the judiciary said it reflects that justice is working.
The Supreme Court of Kenya graciously accepts the Award of Judicial Excellence from the African Bar Association for its exemplary handling of the nine (9) Presidential Election Petitions of 2022. This honour, received with humility, is a tribute to the people of Kenya and the dedication of all Judges, judicial officers, and staff who make justice possible.
The Court has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law in Africa.
Chebukati Declares Ruto Presidential Elect
Former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati declared Ruto the winner of Kenya’s presidential election on August 15, 2022.
Ruto garnered 50.49% of the total valid votes cast ahead of Raila with 48.85%.
However, Raila and his running mate Martha Karua disputed the results, filing a petition at the Supreme Court alongside 8 other petitioners.
Supreme Court Hearing & Ruling
Eight other petitioners also challenged Ruto’s declaration as President-elect.
The petitions were consolidated under Presidential Petition No. E005 of 2022.
The consolidated petitions included: Raila Odinga & Martha Karua, Youth Advocacy Africa, Khelef Khalifa, George Osewe & Ruth Mumbi, Grace Kamau, David Kariuki Ngari, Okiya Omtatah Okoiti , Reuben Kigame Lichete and Law Society of Kenya & 4 others.

The court unanimously upheld William Ruto’s victory as President-elect.
The judges ruled that elections were conducted in line with the Constitution.
Supreme Court said IEBC’s electronic system was secure and there was no evidence of fraud or manipulation.

Besides, it stated it found minor errors, but they did not affect the outcome.
It also ruled that Ruto was validly elected with 50.49% votes.
The 7-judge bench consisted of Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome, Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu, Justices Mohamed Ibrahim, Smokin Wanjala, Njoki Ndung’u, William Ouko, and Isaac Lenaola.
