Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died after receiving treatment for a heart-related condition in Zanzibar.
The death was announced on Monday, September 7, by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Ameir died at about 8am while undergoing treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Hafidh Ameir Dies While Receiving Treatment
According to Ndejembi, Ameir had been receiving medical attention for a heart condition before his death. The Vice President delivered the announcement while conveying condolences to President Samia, the wider family, relatives and Tanzanians.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” Ndejembi said in the announcement.
Following the announcement, Tanzanian authorities began preparations for Ameir’s funeral, with arrangements being made in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

Vice President Ndejembi extended condolences to President Samia, her children, relatives and friends, as well as Tanzanians mourning the loss.
Who Was Hafidh Ameir Hassan?
Hafidh Ameir was married to Samia Suluhu Hassan for decades and remained largely outside the political spotlight despite his wife’s rise through Tanzania’s political leadership.
The couple married in 1978 and had four children; three sons and one daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has been involved in Tanzanian politics and has served as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Ameir was known as a relatively private figure compared with other spouses of African heads of state. His public profile increased after Samia became president in 2021, making him Tanzania’s First Gentleman.
Ameir built his career around agriculture and public service. He was described as an agriculturalist, agricultural academic, and agriculture officer before retiring from government service.

Ruto Sends Condolences to President Samia
President William Ruto has joined Tanzanians in mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, describing him as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian leader and a beloved father.
In his condolence message, President Ruto said he had received the news of Ameir’s death with “deep sorrow”, extending condolences on behalf of the Kenyan Government, the people of Kenya, the First Lady, his family and himself.
Ruto specifically acknowledged the personal loss suffered by President Samia, her children and the wider Tanzanian family.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, my family and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania. President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” said Ruto
