Gatundu South Member of Parliament Gabriel Kagombe famously known as GG Kagombe has been released from police custody.
Kagombe has been behind bars following his arrest in connection to the murder of a 26-year-old boda-boda rider at a political gathering in Thika, Kiambu County.
The High Court of Kenya in Machakos on Friday, June 7, however ordered the release of the Gatundu South MP on a Ksh1 million cash bail after he denied the murder charges tabled against him.
The case will come up for mentioning on July 17, 2024.

The lawmaker appeared before the court but did not take a plea before High Court Judge Francis Rayola.

In addition, the prosecution applied to be allowed to take the Member of Parliament for mental assessment before he could be asked to answer murder charges.
Following the application, justice Rayola ordered that a mental assessment be done and directed that the accused be taken to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital on Wednesday, June 5, before he is formally charged.
“On whether or not the accused person should be released on anticipatory bond terms as issued in Kiambu on miscellaneous application number 804/24 is a matter of further litigation,” ruled the judge.
At the time, the plea to release the lawmaker on bond was opposed by the State counsel on the basis of the information which had been filed, stating that bail is not permissible at this stage.
“On this score I do agree with the State counsel that anticipatory bail granted only applied before charges are filed. Once formal charges are filed, the same anticipatory bail is overtaken by events and the accused person will apply for new bail/bond terms once formally charged before this court,” justice Rayola ruled.

Kagombe was arrested over the death of a boda-boda rider following a deadly shooting incident in the Kiganjo area of Thika, Kiambu County on May 17, 2024.
Deadly Shooting
On the fateful day, the lawmaker had attended a ceremony to launch the construction of a market alongside Thika MP Alice Wahome in the area when chaos erupted.
Ng’ang’a and Kagombe were flanked by MPs Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu) and Njoroge Kururia (Gatundu North).
The shooting came after chaos erupted between the supporters of MP Alice Wahome and Kamenu Member of County Assembly (MCA) Peter Mburu, who was also holding a separate event at the time.
Following the chaos between the two groups, shots were fired leading to the fatal shooting of the boda-boda rider, with police saying that the Gatundu South MP went into hiding after the incident.
However, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers arrested the lawmaker on Friday, May 31, evening in connection with the murder of the 26-year-old rider.
According to the DCI, Kagombe was arrested in the Kileleshwa area following a three-day police manhunt for him.
DCI noted that the MP’s arrest came after they conducted ballistics on all firearms that were at the scene on the fateful day.
Following preliminary investigations, the detectives confirmed that MP Kagombe owned the weapon that discharged the bullet.
