Kiambu Governor Names Main Target in Deadly Thika Shooting

Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi has broken silence following a dramatic shooting that happened within the County leaving one dead.

While speaking on Tuesday 21, 2024 Wamatangi narrated how he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt claiming that he was the main target of the shooting which happened in Thika.

The governor said that the perpetrators of the incident thought he would attend the event.

Governor Wamatangi further said there were plans to oust him from office linking the chaos to previous verbal attacks on his leadership.

“As the governor I have said publicly that I will not allow my people to be shot here. Those are things which used to happen during colonial times. If you have a problem with the governor, come to me. They have been trying to cause problems each time.

“I know what you did was a way of targeting me. You thought I was going to be there in Kiganjo and you came prepared,” Governor Wamatangi said.

Thika shooting

The dramatic scene happened on May 17,2024, in Thika’s Kimuchu area at a political event attended by 4 Member of Parliaments (MPs) from Kiambu County.

Led by the area MP Alice Ng’ang’a, the parliamentarians were coming from a food donation event at a church located in the area.

Ng’ang’a was flanked by MPs Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), G. G. Kagombe (Gatundu South) and Njoroge Kururia (Gatundu North).

Simultaneously, the area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Peter Mburu was supervising the construction of market sheds, according to police reports.

Mburu was overseeing the event at a market site located about 200 meters away from the church event where the MPs were.

Hell broke loose when two rival groups started pelting each other with stones as Ng’ang’a, her colleagues and a large crowd approached the marketplace.

At the time, the area MCA had begun allocating slots to traders insisting that the market would be built by the local government to end their woes.

According to the police, it is in the middle of the violence that shots were fired by one of the Ng’ang’a’s event attendees after drawing a gun.

Kiambu County Chaos Turns Fatal

However, following the shooting incident a 26-year-old succumbed to gunshot injuries, while another 46-year-old escaped death narrowly with a bullet lodged in his chest.

In addition, the chaos led to the injury of area assistant county commissioner Philomena Nzioki, who was treated and discharged at Avenue Hospital in Thika.

The deceased’s body was preserved at General Kago Funeral home as the police continued with investigations.

Led by Governor Wamatangi, political leaders from the region have condemned the incident and demanded justice for the victims.

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni while speaking on Monday, May 20, said officials of the Limuru III Conference had agreed to set up a team of lawyers to represent the victims.
